More Information Motion sickness is an ailment experienced by those who travel particularly in planes, cars, and boats. Its main symptom is nausea, which is often accompanied by vomiting, dizziness, sweating, and anxiety. Motion sickness is also referred to as “sea sickness” since it is common among those riding in boats or ships. The roots of motion sickness are considered to be quite complex, but most experts believe it is the result of a repetitive motion that disturbs the balance in the inner ear or the labyrinth. Typically, when motion takes place, the brain receives and processes signals from the eyes, tissues, and ear. However, when the body itself does not initiate that motion, there can be conflict among these receptors. Additionally, movement that takes place in two different directions tends to cause motion sickness. Those who are prone to motion sickness can find relief through changing the way they experience motion. Sitting in the front seat of a car or by the window in an airplane often can help. In a boat, sitting on the deck and looking at the horizon can sometimes combat motion sickness. Note that, if you must eat before you travel, make sure that the food you consume is very light. People who eat heavy meals or spicy foods often find that their nausea is aggravated. Conventional medicines recommended to treat motion sickness are often antihistamines, which can help with nausea. A scopolamine skin patch is another method of treatment. The side effects of conventional motion sickness medicines include and are not limited to headaches, dry mouth, drowsiness, and dependency. Homeopathy is very effective in helping decrease the symptoms suffered by those who experience motion sickness during travel. It is also side effect free. Part of the solution is treating the inner ear and supporting equilibrium.
