MOSASAUR TOOTH

A mosasaur tooth is a fascinating and highly collectible fossil from one of the most formidable marine predators of the Late Cretaceous period. What It Is: A mosasaur tooth is a fossilized tooth from a mosasaur, an extinct group of large, carnivorous marine reptiles that lived around 98 to 66 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous. Despite their aquatic lifestyle, mosasaurs were more closely related to modern monitor lizards and snakes than to dinosaurs. 1. Shape & Size: Conical and slightly curved, perfect for gripping slippery prey. Often ribbed or fluted with fine vertical lines on the enamel. 2. Color: Fossilized teeth range in color based on mineral content in the surrounding sediment: Brown, tan, yellowish, gray, or black. 3. Tooth Structure: Often includes visible root and crown (though the root may be incomplete or missing in some specimens). Enamel may show feeding wear or polish from fossilization. Common Locations Found Most mosasaur teeth on the market come from: Morocco – Phosphate beds in the Khouribga region are a major source. North America – U.S. states like Kansas, South Dakota, and Texas. Europe – The Netherlands and Belgium. 🧾 Scientific & Collectible Value 🔬 Scientific: Helps paleontologists study marine ecosystems, evolution, and feeding behaviors of ancient reptiles. 💰 Collectible: Popular with fossil collectors, educators, and as decorative items.
