Monumental Antique Thai Temple Scroll

This is  a monumental masterpiece of Thai Buddhist storytelling. This large-scale antique Phra Bot temple scroll captures the "Himavanta" chapter of the Vessantara Jataka, depicting the profound moment Prince Vessantara relinquishes his kingdom's sacred white elephant to the Brahmins of Kalinga. This act of supreme generosity, believed to ensure the spiritual merit of the donor, is rendered with the rhythmic, high-detail gouache and pigment work characteristic of classical Siamese tradition. Standing nearly five feet tall, this scroll was designed to command the interior of a village monastery, serving as a visual sermon for the community. The composition flows with a sense of divine movement, featuring traditional Thai architectural elements and a rich, earthen palette that has softened over a century of ritual use. Mounted on its original weighted wooden poles, it remains a functional piece of heritage that doubles as a powerful architectural anchor for a modern grand foyer or high-ceilinged gallery.
As a significant antique artifact, this scroll is a testament to the passage of time. It is presented in Original Antique Condition, exhibiting a deeply earned patina and visible signs of its storied history, including historical holes, honest rips, and significant pigment weathering. These "wounds of devotion" are what distinguish an authentic period artifact from a modern reproduction, marking it as a rare and soulful acquisition for the serious collector.  • *Era: Late 19th / Early 20th Century  • *Size: 34.5“(L) x 57.5“(H)  • *Material: Traditional Pigments and Gouache on Linen/Cloth; Original Solid Wood Poles  • *Features: Large-scale Vessantara Jataka narrative; traditional Phra Bot format; original hanging hardware.  • *Origin: Thailand (Temple Salvage)  • *Condition: Original Antique Condition.
