Mongozo Gluten Removed Assorted Pack  (4-11.2 oz bottles) Gluten Removed Beer Brewed by: Brouwerij Huyghe Country: Belgium Style: Pilsner, White, and Ale ABV: 3.6-5% BeerAdvocate.com rating: 72-74 Mongozo Assorted Pack contains 1 of each of the following: Pilsener, Coconut, Mango and Banana. The base of each of these beers is either a pilsener, white ale, or ale that is then brewed with the respective fruit. These gluten removed beers are made from barley or wheat then treated with proprietary enzymes that break down gluten proteins during fermentation. This process reduces gluten levels to meet thresholds below 20 parts per million which meets the strict threshold of the European Union for customers seeking Gluten Free beer. The enzyme process preserves the familiar taste, aroma and mouthfeel associated with beer. As a result, gluten-reduced beer appeals to drinkers who are gluten-intolerant or seeking to limit gluten intake, though it may not be suitable for individuals with celiac disease due to potential trace amounts of gluten.  The 5% ABV Gluten Removed Pilsener is golden yellow and clear in appearance. Notes of sharp hops and pale malts define the aroma. The flavor is slightly bitter, hoppy, yet smooth, making it a refreshing, easy-drinking beer. Only high quality organically certified barley malt, rice, and hops are utilized. The rice is also acquired through fair trade practices. Rated 73 The 3.6% ABV Gluten Removed Banana fruit ale is banana-yellow in color with a creamy off-white head of foam.  Aromas of ripe bananas greet the drinker’s nose. Fresh, sweet and fruity banana flavors characterize the beer with hints of malt and hops in the finish. Rated 74 The 3.6% ABV Gluten Removed Coconut white ale is slightly cloudy, pale yellowish-white in color and has a creamy head. The smell is pronounced fresh coconut aroma. The initial refreshing burst of coconut flavor creates an exotic drinking experience. The base of this beer is Mongozo’s Buckwheat White Ale, known for its versatility in pairing with a wide range of dishes and flavors. Rated 72 The 3.6% ABV Gluten Removed Mango ale is golden yellow with a compact head of foam.  The scent of fresh mango and tropical fruits creates a complex and inviting aroma.  The sweet and refreshing taste of fresh mangos are present from start to finish. Mongozo Mango is easy-drinking with a fine balance of refreshing fruit flavor. Rated 74 Brewery Information: Located in the city of Melle in the East Flanders region of Belgium, the Huyghe Brewery was founded in 1906 when Leon Huyghe purchased a local brewery ("Den Appel") whose history in the region went back at least several centuries, to the mid-1600s. Under his stewardship, the brewery survived both World Wars and actually managed to thrive; but by the 1970s and into the early 1980s sales of the staple brews – then based on lager and Dortmund style beers – were in decline. The brewery found itself – like so many other small family owned breweries of the time – unable to compete successfully with Flanders' larger commercial breweries. In 1985 the Huyghe Brewery refocused its efforts to concentrate production on high quality, high alcohol, specialty ales only. The flagship brew of this style, Delirium Tremens, was introduced to high acclaim in 1987 and the brewery's fortunes flourished once again. Today, still helmed by the Huyghe family, the Huyghe Brewery produces and distributes award winning specialty ales to at least eight countries including the United States, Canada, Italy and Japan.
