In this painting, rays of light, etched with the sacred patterns of Samoan tatau, descend upon a woman surrounded by waves and memory. She is Moiu‘ule‘apai, a high chief’s daughter, who married Tuifiti, the king of Fiji. When famine struck in Fiji, she was blamed and banished to the inland forests, with only her maidservant for company. But her brother, Taeotagaloa, journeyed from Manu‘a to comfort her. He planted food in their mountains, taro, yam, and banana, restoring her dignity through compassion. This act of love and reconciliation moved Tuifiti and his people. They welcomed Moiu‘ule‘apai back, and the place was named Fitiuta which means “Inland Fiji.” That name lives on, both in Samoa and in this painting, where the light returns to her, as it always should have.
