Mohawk Burkwood Viburnum

Mohawk Burkwood Viburnum (Viburnum x burkwoodii 'Mohawk')Mohawk Burkwood Viburnum is a dense, fragrant shrub that brings privacy and a polished look to borders, foundations, and property lines. In mid spring, red buds open into creamy white flower clusters that scent the air and make outdoor spaces feel more inviting. The glossy foliage holds a clean, deep green presence through summer, then finishes with warm fall tones in many gardens. It is an easy way to add structure and seasonal interest without fussy maintenance. Distinctive FeaturesThis semi-evergreen to deciduous viburnum is valued for its very fragrant spring bloom and naturally full branching that builds an effective screen. Flower clusters open from deep red buds to white blooms with a pinkish cast on the petal backs, creating extra depth up close. After bloom, small drupes can develop that shift from red to black later in the season, adding another layer of interest and potential wildlife value. The leaves are glossy and handsome, and fall color often leans orange-red to burgundy depending on conditions. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade, with best flowering and density in full sun. Soil: Average, well-drained soil, with improved performance in loam enriched with organic matter. Water: Medium moisture, watering regularly to establish and during extended dry periods. USDA Zones: Zones 5 to 8. Mature Size: About 6 to 10 feet tall and about 6 to 10 feet wide. Habit: Dense, multi-stemmed, upright to rounded. Bloom Season: Mid spring. Fruit: Red drupes that can ripen to black in late summer to fall. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Place near an entry or patio where the spring fragrance and red-bud bloom show can be enjoyed up close. Screening: Plant in rows or staggered groups to create a soft, flowering privacy screen. Informal Hedges: Use as a tall hedge that looks full and refined without rigid shearing. Foundation Planting: Anchor larger walls and corners where dense foliage adds structure and curb appeal. Mixed Shrub Borders: Combine with evergreens and later-blooming shrubs for layered texture and season-long presence. Pollinator Gardens: Include where spring blooms can support early-season pollinators. Low Maintenance Care Pruning: Prune right after flowering if shaping is needed, since next season's blooms form on older wood. Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during the first growing season, then water deeply during drought to reduce stress. Mulching: Mulch to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature, keeping mulch pulled back from the stems. Feeding: Feed lightly in spring only if growth is weak, since average soils are usually sufficient. Deer Resistance: Often deer resistant once established, but protect young plants where browsing pressure is high. Why Choose Mohawk Burkwood Viburnum? Fragrant Spring Bloom: Strongly scented flower clusters make outdoor spaces feel more inviting in mid spring. Red Bud Contrast: Deep red buds add color and definition before the white flowers fully open. Privacy And Structure: Dense branching and substantial size create an effective screen and a finished backdrop. Seasonal Interest: Glossy summer foliage, potential fruit, and warm fall tones extend value beyond bloom. Easy Performance: Adaptable growth and low maintenance needs make it a dependable landscape shrub. It looks especially strong when planted in repeating groups, where the bloom show and dense habit read as one cohesive design element. With simple post-bloom pruning and occasional deep watering in dry weather, it stays full, clean, and reliable.
