Box is made from durable 18-8 stainless steel and sits in a heavy non-slip rubber base. Standard coffee shop sizing measures 4.5-inches by 4.75-inches by 6.25-inches tall. Knock box comes with removable rubber-coated bar. Dishwasher safe. A knock box is a device used to collect used espresso grounds, or "pucks", after making espresso. It's also known as a "bash bin" or "coffee column".  How it works  After brewing, tap the portafilter against the knock box's padded surface. The knock box's catch bin collects the spent pucks. Benefits of using a knock box Sanitary: A knock box is a more sanitary alternative to throwing used coffee grounds directly into the trash.  Protects portafilter: Knocking the portafilter against a trash can can damage it.  Prevents odor: Knock boxes trap the smell of old coffee grounds.  Stores coffee grounds: You can store coffee grounds in a knock box for later use in compost.  Knock box materials Knock boxes are usually made of stainless steel or plastic. They need to be sturdy because they're subject to repeated tapping.  Placement Knock boxes are often placed next to the espresso machine so you can quickly dispose of used grounds.
