She deserved to live a long and beautiful life. Emily loved to paint and create art. She dreamed of going to art school. TW: MMIWG Emily was reported missing after she was last seen on January 27th in Mesa, Arizona. Her body was found last month along a highway. The details of how she was found are truly devastating. Her mother said, "She was just an innocent... she was a baby." Emily deserved to live a long, loving life. Too many Native people understand the pain of losing their loved ones to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) crisis. In the United States, 80% of Indigenous women and girls experience violence in their lifetime. Native women and girls are 10 times more likely to be murdered than non-Indigenous people. In 2016, more than 5,700 Indigenous women were reported missing in the U.S., but only 116 cases were officially recorded in federal databases. The real numbers are likely much higher due to underreporting and poor data collection. We deserve better. Emily deserved to live a long, loving, and beautiful life. MMIW Awareness: To ensure that MMIW are remembered, be mindful of the families that have worked diligently to get this day recognized. To do this, wear red, host a candlelight vigil in your community, or a prayer circle. Use your voice – Share your stories, pictures, videos, and other things with each other. We can help keep the MMIW movement going strong. Speak to your friends and consider using social media as an outlet to remember MMIW and to keep the movement going. ------------------------------------------- Welcome Native Spirit is proud to sponsor and support the MMIWG2S Alaska Run for Healing, Run for Justice, an event dedicated to honoring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Relatives.
