Stage 1 is a diamond-coated wheel of medium grit capable of sharpening the hardest steels, even in excess of 66 Rockwell, and stage 2 is a white ceramic fine grit perfect for touch-ups, or smoothing out the grind from the first stage. A safety grip keeps hands away from blades as you pull the knife through the sharpener.
