When picking out a planting site, look for somewhere in full sun with well-drained soil. This will ensure your shrub is happy from the start. You'll want to water well during the first year to help it get established, but after that, these shrubs can be low-moisture needs. Appreciating a 3-4 inch layer of mulching around the bottom will help regulate temperatures and conserve water. Buddleia is a woody shrub in warmer areas but is typically treated much more like Perennials in colder climates. You'll want to cut back all stems in late winter before the growing season starts. This helps the plant develop new fresh growth from down low. Plus, if you deadhead the shrub throughout its blooming season, it'll encourage the plant to produce new flowers and continue blooming. You can also try renewal pruning by removing a third of the oldest growth every 3-5 years. Mow or trim back suckers if they are not desired each year.
