Health and Care: Hardy and Resilient: The Mille Fleur d'Uccle Bantam is a hardy breed that does well in moderate weather. Due to their small size and fluffy feathers they do better in mild weather but can tolerate cold as long as they are kept in a dry, draft free shelter. They don’t do well in extreme heat so make sure to provide plenty of shade, fresh water, and ventilation in hot weather. Disease Resistance: The Mille Fleur d'Uccle Bantam is generally healthy and disease resistant. Like all chickens they can get mites, lice and respiratory infections but they are less prone to health issues than other breeds. Regular grooming, feather inspections and a clean living environment will help keep them healthy. Low Maintenance: These bantams are low maintenance in care. They need a balanced diet, fresh water and a clean dry living space. Due to their fluffy feathers they need some grooming to keep their feathers neat and clean especially around their feathered legs. Egg Laying: Moderate Egg Production: The Mille Fleur d'Uccle Bantam is not a high egg producer but they do produce small white or light brown eggs. They lay 150-200 eggs a year which is moderate compared to other breeds. They may not produce as many eggs as other breeds but their consistency makes them good for small scale egg use. Seasonal Laying: Like most chickens egg production will decrease in winter months due to shorter daylight hours. However supplemental lighting in the coop can help maintain egg production throughout the year. Small White or Light Brown Eggs: The eggs they lay are small, white or light brown good for household use but not as big as commercial egg layers. Temperament: Docile and Friendly: One of the best qualities of the Mille Fleur d'Uccle Bantam is its gentle, calm and affectionate nature. These chickens are known to be very friendly and easy to handle good for families, children and first time chicken owners. They love human interaction and are not flighty or aggressive. Sociable: The Mille Fleur d'Uccle Bantam is a very sociable breed that gets along with other chickens. They are peaceful and non aggressive good for mixed flock environments. These chickens are friendly and tolerant of other birds including different breeds. Quiet and Calm: These bantams are generally quiet and calm. While they are active in their own way they are not known to be too loud or energetic. Their gentle nature makes them a good choice for urban or suburban areas where noise is a concern. Appearance: Mille Fleur Plumage: The Mille Fleur d'Uccle Bantam is most admired for its beautiful plumage which has a light cream colored base with dark specks that create a mottled, floral pattern. This "thousand flowers" effect makes the bird look delicate and ornamental and is highly prized in poultry shows. Fluffy Body: The Mille Fleur d'Uccle Bantam has a round fluffy body characteristic of many Cochin and d'Uccle breeds. Their feathers especially around the chest and legs are dense and soft adding to their overall rounded appearance. This fluffy body makes them look bigger than they are. Small to Medium Build: The Mille Fleur d'Uccle Bantam is a medium size bantam. Hens weigh around 1-1.5 pounds and roosters weigh about 1.5-2 pounds. Despite being small they have fluffy plumage that makes them look fuller.* Feathered Legs and Feet: Like all d'Uccle bantams the Mille Fleur d'Uccle Bantam has feathered legs and feet. These feathers are soft and fluffy adding to their charm. They may need cleaning especially in muddy or wet conditions. Small Comb and Wattles: The Mille Fleur d'Uccle Bantam has a small single comb which is usually red and small wattles. These are proportionate to their small size and do not overwhelm their delicate appearance. The comb and wattles are usually red providing a nice contrast to their soft mottled feathers. Bright Eyes and Expression: The Mille Fleur d'Uccle Bantam has bright eyes and a gentle expression. They are very alert and observant but calm and not skittish or nervous.
