Milkweed Antelope Horns

Antelope Horns Milkweed, also known as Spider Milkweed, is a resilient native perennial wildflower found across the dry plains, rocky hillsides, and deserts of the American Southwest and South Central regions. Named for its distinctive, curved seed pods that resemble the horns of an antelope, it is one of the most critical host plants for the Monarch butterfly. The Milkweed Antelope Horns grows into a compact, low-clumping plant reaching 1 to 2 feet tall with a 1.5 to 3-foot spread. The plant features narrow, trough-like leaves that fold inward along the midrib and stems filled with milky, latex sap. The plant then produces striking 3-to-4-inch globe-shaped clusters (umbels) of pale pale green-to-white flowers highlighted by deep purple or maroon centers from mid-spring through early summer. In late summer, the flowers give way to rough, curved seed pods up to 4 inches long. When mature, they split open to release flat brown seeds attached to silky white hairs. Overall, the Milkweed Antelope is drought hardy and serves as a vital early-season host plant for Monarch butterfly caterpillars laying eggs during their spring migration north, while offering high-value nectar to native bees and butterflies. Scientific Name Asclepias asperula (Antelope Horns Milkweed / Spider Milkweed) Foliage: Deciduous Herbaceous perennial rough, green to reddish-purple non-woody stems; sprawling to clump-forming stems; contains milky white latex sap Leaves: Narrow, lanceolate to linear, 4–8 inches long; folded lengthwise (trough-like), rough-textured, dull green, often arranged alternately or in irregular whorls Flowers: Showy, dense 3-to-4-inch spherical clusters (umbels); individual flowers are greenish-white to pale yellow with deep purple-to-maroon centers (coronas); blooms spring to early summer Fruit: Distinctive curved, horn-like seed pods (follicles), 3–4 inches long; rough-textured skin resembling antelope horns (origin of common name) Seeds: Flat brown seeds attached to silky, white feathery hairs (coma) that facilitate wind dispersal Life Span: Perennial Long-lived, 10–20+ years via a deep, fleshy taproot. Mature Height 1–2 ft (often low and sprawling) Mature Width (Spread) 1.5–3 ft Growth Rate Moderate USDA Zone / Chill Hours Zones 5–9; requires winter cold stratification for seeds, but mature rootstocks need no specific chill hours PLANT CARE & CHARACTERISTICS Light Requirements: Full Sun (Requires 6+ hours of direct sunlight daily). Water Requirements: Low; water occasionally during initial establishment, highly drought-tolerant once deep taproot sets. Drought Resistance: Exceptional; thrives in arid, hot, and rocky environments. Soil Type: Extremely adaptable to poor soils; prefers dry, rocky, gravelly, sandy, or well-draining limestone soils; pH 6.5–8.0. Deer Resistance: Very High (Toxic cardiac glycosides in milky sap make it unpalatable to deer, rabbits, and livestock). Pest / Disease Resistance: High natural resistance; host plant for Monarch butterfly caterpillars (Danaus plexippus); occasionally attracts Oleander Aphids. Pollination: Insect-pollinated; essential nectar source for Monarchs, native bees, butterflies, and tarantula hawk wasps. Storage / Shelf Life: Dried seed pods can be stored in cool, dry conditions for 1 to 2 years for propagation. PROPAGATION 1. Collect Seed Pods: Late Summer / Early Fall. Harvest pods when they turn light brown and begin to split open along the seam. The seeds inside should be dark brown, not pale or green. Separate the seeds from the silky white fluff (coma) by placing seeds and fluff inside a paper bag with a coin or marble and shaking vigorously. 2. Cold Stratification (Crucial Step): Timing- 30 to 60 Days. Asclepias asperula seeds have hard seed coats with deep physiological dormancy that requires cold, moist stratification to trigger germination. Mix clean seeds with slightly damp sand, vermiculite, or a damp paper towel. Seal the mixture in a plastic bag or container. Place in a refrigerator (35°F to 40°F) for 30 to 60 days. 3. Sowing Seeds: Spring / Post-Stratification.  Indoor Sowing: Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in deep plug trays or tall root-trainer pots (to accommodate the long taproot). Use a well-draining, sandy seed-starting mix. Keep soil warm (70°F to 75°F) under light.  Direct Outdoor Sowing: Alternatively, bypass cold refrigeration by sowing raw seeds outdoors directly in autumn (October–November). Natural winter freezes will break dormancy for spring germination. 4. Transplanting to Permanent Location: Early Spring / Young Seedling Stage. Transplant seedlings outdoors into full sun and well-drained soil when they are 2–4 inches tall with 2–3 sets of true leaves. Handle rootballs with extreme care—Antelope Horns Milkweed develops a deep, sensitive taproot very early, and root disturbance will stunt or kill the plant. Pruning: Very Low maintenance; cut back dead stems to ground level in late fall or early winter after the plant goes dormant. Avoid moving or disturbing mature plants due to deep taproot.
