‘The Milkmaid’, sometimes called The Kitchen Maid, is a painting of a milkmaid,by the Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer between 1658-1661. Vermeer is best known for his extra-ordinary treatment of light, and the painting is on sight at the Rijks- museum in Amsterdam, as one of the main attractions of the Museum. For at least two centuries before the painting was created, milkmaids and kitchen maids had a reputation as being predisposed to love or sex, and this was frequently reflected in Dutch paintings of kitchen and market scenes from Antwerp, Utrecht and Delft.
