Merlot Virginia Sweetspire

Merlot Virginia Sweetspire (Itea virginica 'Merlot')Merlot Virginia Sweetspire is a compact native shrub that delivers sweet fragrance and bright white flower clusters without overwhelming smaller landscapes. It is especially valuable in moisture-retentive soils, giving you reliable performance in damp spots while still looking polished near patios and foundations. The dense habit makes it easy to repeat for a cohesive border, and the flowers support pollinators as the garden moves into summer. When nights cool, the foliage turns deep red to burgundy for a strong, extended fall finish. Distinctive FeaturesThis selection is prized for its compact, mounded form and richly colored fall foliage that often intensifies in sunnier sites. In late spring to early summer, it produces fragrant white flower racemes that sit above the foliage and create a soft, fountain-like effect. The leaves are glossy green through summer, then shift to wine-red and burgundy tones in fall for a memorable late-season show. It can slowly spread by suckers over time, which helps it knit into a fuller mass in naturalistic plantings.
