Merlot Coneflower

Merlot Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea Prairie Pillars 'Merlot')Merlot Coneflower brings rich summer color and strong vertical structure to sunny gardens with large rose-pink blooms carried on dramatic burgundy-black stems. Its substantial, well-branched habit makes it especially effective in perennial borders, pollinator plantings, and cutting gardens where strong flower presence and sturdy stems both matter. This Prairie Pillars selection offers the dependable toughness gardeners expect from echinacea while adding darker stems and a more architectural look than many standard purple coneflowers. It is an excellent choice for adding long-lasting bloom, wildlife value, and a bold focal point to sunny landscapes. Distinctive FeaturesThis selection produces very large rose-pink flowers, often about 5 inches across, with broad petals surrounding prominent orange cones for a bright, high-contrast display. The blooms are held on exceptionally sturdy, well-branched burgundy-black stems above green foliage, giving the plant a striking presence even before peak bloom. It typically matures about 27 inches tall and 34 inches wide, with flowers rising to about 30 inches in bloom. Flowering begins in midsummer and can continue into fall, with fragrant blooms and lasting seed heads extending seasonal interest well beyond the first flush. Growing Conditions Sun: Plant in full sun for best flowering, strongest stems, and the fullest habit. Soil: Grow in average, well-drained soil and avoid poorly drained or consistently wet planting sites. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide low to moderate water, allowing the soil to dry somewhat between waterings. Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 4 to 9. Habit: This variety has a broad, upright to mounding, clump-forming habit with strong branching and thick flowering stems. Bloom Season: Expect flowering from July into October under favorable conditions. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use its large rose-pink blooms and dark stems as a focal point in sunny borders where strong contrast can anchor surrounding plant combinations. Borders: Place it in the middle to back of perennial beds where its height, spread, and dramatic stems can rise clearly above lower companions. Pollinator Gardens: Add it to butterfly and pollinator plantings to support bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial visitors through the season. Cut Flowers: Grow it for cutting gardens where the long, very strong stems and large blooms perform beautifully in fresh arrangements. Mixed Plantings: Pair it with ornamental grasses, salvias, rudbeckias, and other sun-loving perennials for a long-season display with strong structure. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during the first growing season, then water mainly during extended dry periods once established. Deadheading: Remove faded flowers to encourage continued bloom and keep the plant looking tidy, or leave seed heads for later texture and bird interest. Feeding: Apply compost or only light fertilizer in spring, since overly rich soil can reduce sturdy growth and long-term performance. Cleanup: Cut stems back in late fall or late winter after seed heads have provided seasonal interest. Tolerance: Once established, this variety is commonly noted for drought tolerance, deer resistance, fragrance, and strong performance in hot sunny conditions. Why Choose Merlot Coneflower? Dark Stem Contrast: The burgundy-black stems give the plant a dramatic look that sets it apart from standard coneflower varieties. Large Showy Blooms: Its oversized rose-pink flowers create strong visual impact in borders and cutting gardens. Strong Stems: Thick, well-branched stems help the flowers hold well in the garden and in fresh arrangements. Pollinator Appeal: The blooms attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial visitors, while later seed heads can support birds. Reliable Toughness: This is a sturdy perennial that handles sun, summer heat, and lower water conditions well once established. Merlot Coneflower is a smart choice for gardeners who want classic echinacea durability with stronger stems, darker contrast, and a more architectural garden presence. Its large flowers and broad clump make it especially useful in sunny borders where lasting impact matters from midsummer into fall. In pollinator gardens, cutting beds, and mixed perennial plantings, it delivers dependable seasonal value with straightforward care.
