McIntosh MDA200

The McIntosh MDA200 Digital to Analog Converter is only the fourth DAC in the company's long history. After the discontinuation of the D150, McIntosh designed a new approach, offering the DAC as a separate module that can be inserted into various McIntosh components to add digital source capability. McIntosh has built a reputation for creating products that last for generations, with the MDA200 embodying this commitment. While the core components like power amps and preamps remain largely unchanged over time, the digital technology evolves rapidly. As a result, the MDA200 is designed with future-proofing in mind, incorporating McIntosh’s latest innovations. Design and Build Quality: The MDA200 features a sleek, slim profile with a timeless black glass faceplate, illuminated McIntosh logo, and classic rotary control knobs. The custom-machined aluminum end caps further emphasize McIntosh’s premium design. In our tests, it was clear how thoughtfully McIntosh engineers consider the aesthetic harmony of their components. For example, the height and knob placement of the MDA200 align perfectly with the C22 preamp, showcasing the company's meticulous attention to detail. The front panel’s LED lighting system, designed for long-term use, features tiny surface mount LEDs that are powered at low levels for decades of service. Features and Technology: The MDA200 can function either as a standalone DAC or as a fully operational digital preamp in a digital-only setup. It supports seven digital inputs, including two coaxial, two optical, one USB, one MCT for McIntosh transport connections, and one HDMI ARC for TV audio. The HDMI-ARC feature is particularly notable as it allows seamless TV integration, where the TV remote can control the MDA200’s power, input selection, and volume. The DAC’s versatility extends to its multi-channel audio processing, including Dolby® and DTS® formats, which are downmixed to high-quality stereo. Additionally, McIntosh allows for customization, offering options to rename inputs and adjust trim levels for each one to balance their volume levels. The unit uses an electronically controlled input system, ensuring quiet, distortion-free switching. For users utilizing the USB input for computer audio, the MDA200 is Roon tested, ensuring smooth integration with digital libraries. It can also operate with variable output for use as a preamp, boasting low output impedance and high output (up to 8 volts), ensuring it can drive even long cable runs without loss of dynamic range. Digital Module Design: A standout feature of the MDA200 is its modular design, specifically the digital audio module, which can be upgraded as new technology emerges. The MDA200 is compatible with the DA1 and DA2 digital modules, which can be swapped out for future versions like the anticipated DA3, keeping the unit up-to-date with evolving digital standards. The DA2 module features excellent DAC technology, processing signals up to 192kHz/24-bit for coaxial and optical inputs, and up to 192kHz/32-bit and DSD512 for the USB input. McIntosh's Quad Balanced, 8-channel, 32-bit DAC design reduces noise and provides superior performance by paralleling two DACs for each half of the signal, improving signal-to-noise ratio. Performance: In testing, the MDA200 delivered exceptional audio quality, elevating sound from a Cambridge Audio CXN V2 streamer to a level far beyond its price. With a deep, impactful bass and dynamic contrasts, the MDA200 added a sense of musicality and detail that was absent in the original source. Tracks like "Canola Fields" by James McMurtry and "Magic Carpet Ride" by Steppenwolf sounded rich and immersive, with excellent clarity and no harshness, even at high volumes. Recommendations: The MDA200 is a fantastic addition to any McIntosh system, offering outstanding performance and future-proof technology. Its ability to handle both DAC and preamp functions, with flexible digital inputs and customizable features, makes it a great choice for audiophiles. The modular design is a significant advantage, allowing for upgrades as new digital technologies emerge. For McIntosh owners, it's an easy recommendation. If you’re seeking a high-performance DAC, the MDA200 is worth serious consideration, especially with its compatibility with the DA2 module for even better performance.
