May, Esquire Calendar by Varga

This original calendar page from the 1949 Esquire Girl Calendar showcases Alberto Vargas at the height of his powers. The May illustration features a blonde beauty in a white swimsuit accented with vibrant orange feathers, perched demurely on a bamboo bench in the artist's signature soft-focus airbrush style. A playful verse invites viewers to head for the shore, capturing the optimistic spirit of post-war American leisure. Vargas perfected his distinctive technique over decades, creating idealized feminine forms that defined American pin-up art. His work for Esquire magazine helped legitimize the genre as a respectable art form, moving beyond wartime nose art into mainstream publication. The characteristic blend of innocence and allure, rendered in his masterful gradients and flawless flesh tones, made Vargas the undisputed master of the form. A charming example of late 1940s commercial illustration, this piece bridges wartime nostalgia and peacetime prosperity. The intact calendar grid and whimsical typography add ephemeral charm to what was designed as a disposable object but has endured as collectible Americana. *Please note image is from a calendar that has been separated, top border has been minorly trimmed to remove calendar wire-holes from binding.
