Cartilage degeneration takes place when the animal supplies too little Glucosamine to the joints and cartilage begins to break down. With trauma and age, the animals ability to convert glucose and glutamine to Glucosamine declines. Glucosamine adminstration has the ability to stimulate the cartilage forming cell (chondrocytes) to manufacture proteoglycans. Chondroitin sulfate mechanism of action is by direct inhibition of the enzymes that destroy cartilage, allowing the rebuilding process to proceed. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is produced naturally in the body as a viscous complex with proteins forming a gel matrix and aggregates with proteoglycans in cartilage.
