Max Frei Bloody Cranesbill Geranium (Geranium sanguineum 'Max Frei')Max Frei Bloody Cranesbill Geranium is a compact, flowering groundcover that brings strong color and a clean, finished look to the front of the border. It spreads into a dense, low mat that helps cover soil and reduce weeds without feeling aggressive. Bright magenta to reddish-purple blooms keep coming through late spring and summer, giving you dependable color in a wide range of garden styles. Once established, it is drought tolerant and easy to maintain, making it a practical choice for busy landscapes. Distinctive FeaturesThis hardy geranium forms a tidy, mounded carpet of deeply lobed green foliage topped with vivid magenta to reddish-purple, veined flowers. The bloom show is heaviest from late spring into early summer, with additional flowering often continuing through summer, especially with occasional trimming and moisture during dry spells. Foliage stays attractive through the growing season and can develop red to bronze tones in fall. The overall habit is low and spreading, making it ideal for edging, groundcover use, and filling gaps in mixed borders. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade, with best flowering in sun and some afternoon shade helpful in hotter areas. Soil: Well-drained soil is ideal, and it tolerates a range of soils as long as drainage is good. Water: Medium moisture during establishment, then low to medium water, watering during extended drought for best bloom and foliage. USDA Zones: USDA Zones 3 to 8. Drainage: Avoid persistently wet sites to keep crowns healthy and reduce stress. Heat and Drought: Once established, it handles dry periods well, especially in well-drained soils. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Plant a drift along the front of a bed so the magenta blooms create a bright ribbon of color at ground level. Groundcover: Use to knit open soil into a dense, weed-suppressing mat that keeps borders looking finished. Edging: Line paths and bed fronts for a low, tidy border that stays neat with minimal shaping. Rock Gardens: Tuck into sunny, well-drained pockets where the compact habit and blooms read clearly. Slope Planting: Use on banks to help cover soil and reduce weedy gaps with a spreading, low habit. Low Maintenance Care Shearing: Trim lightly after the main bloom flush to refresh foliage and encourage continued flowering. Watering: Water during prolonged drought, especially in full sun, to maintain stronger bloom and greener foliage. Mulching: Mulch lightly to conserve moisture and reduce weeds, keeping mulch off the crowns for airflow. Division: Divide every few years in spring or fall if you want to rejuvenate vigor or expand plantings. Cleanup: Remove tired leaves in late winter or early spring so fresh growth emerges cleanly.
