Midwest Lesbian Conference & Music Festival (Poster Reprint/1974)

Midwest Lesbian Conference & Music Festival — Poster Reprint (1974) Community. Culture. A movement finding its voice. In 1974, the Midwest Lesbian Conference and Music Festival brought together women from across the region for a gathering that blended politics, culture, and celebration at a pivotal moment in the women’s and LGBTQ liberation movements. The early 1970s were a time of intense organizing. Lesbian feminists were building their own networks, publications, and spaces — often separate from both mainstream feminist organizations and male-dominated gay activism. Conferences like this one became essential meeting points where ideas could be shared, strategies debated, and community strengthened. But it wasn’t all meetings and workshops. Music was central. Women performers, poets, and folk musicians helped define what would become the early women’s music movement, creating songs that reflected lesbian identity, feminist politics, and the shared experiences of a generation seeking visibility and autonomy.
