Marigold (calendula)

CALENDULA OFFICINALIS The golden healer of the herb garden -- a gentle yet powerful skin-mending, anti-inflammatory, and immune-supportive flower used across every major herbal tradition. BOTANICAL IDENTIFICATION Scientific Name: Calendula officinalis L. Common Names: Calendula, Pot Marigold, Garden Marigold, Gold-bloom, Marigold, Mary's Gold, Holligold, Ruddles Family: Asteraceae (Daisy/Composite family) Calendula is a short-lived perennial or annual herb growing 30-60 cm tall with branching, slightly angular stems covered in fine, glandular hairs. The leaves are oblong to spatulate, 5-15 cm long, pale green, and slightly sticky to the touch. The flower heads are the plant's glory: composite ray florets in shades of vivid golden-yellow to deep orange, measuring 4-7 cm across, with a mild, resinous, slightly peppery aroma. The ligulate ray florets are the primary medicinal part, though the entire flower head is used. Native to southern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean, calendula has been cultivated so widely and for so long that it is now naturalized across temperate regions worldwide. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, tolerates poor soils, and blooms prolifically from late spring through the first hard frost -- a flowering persistence that gave rise to its Latin name, from calendae, meaning the first day of each month, because it seemed to be in flower at every calendar turn. CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL USE Calendula has been a cornerstone of European folk medicine and kitchen herbalism for over a thousand years. The ancient Romans and Greeks used calendula flowers as a culinary herb, adding the petals to broths, porridges, and syrups -- hence the common name "pot marigold," referring to the cooking pot rather than a garden container. Dioscorides and Pliny both noted the plant's external healing properties. In medieval monasteries, calendula was among the most frequently cultivated medicinal plants, appearing in Hildegard von Bingen's writings (12th century) and in virtually every European herbal from the Renaissance forward. Nicholas Culpeper (1653) called it a "comforter of the heart and spirits" and recommended it for strengthening the heart, treating fevers, and healing wounds. In traditional Ayurvedic practice, calendula is classified as cooling and bitter, used for skin inflammation, wound healing, and as a mild blood purifier. While not a classical Ayurvedic herb in the way that turmeric or neem are, its integration into Indian herbal practice reflects its broad adaptability. In the Unani tradition of the Islamic world, calendula flowers were used in preparations for eye complaints, jaundice, and menstrual support. Across Latin America, caléndula remains one of the most widely used home remedies for skin irritation, diaper rash, minor burns, and oral thrush. The cultural significance of calendula extends beyond medicine. In Mexican Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) celebrations, marigold flowers -- primarily Tagetes erecta but also calendula -- create the iconic golden pathways guiding spirits home. In European Christian tradition, the name "Mary's Gold" connects the flower to the Virgin Mary, and it was placed on church altars during Marian festivals. In the language of flowers, calendula represents grief, despair, or the pain of separation -- yet paradoxically also symbolizes warmth, healing, and the sun's constancy. KEY BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS & BENEFITS Compound/Class Location in Plant Human Benefit Role in Plant Triterpenoid saponins (faradiol, arnidiol, calenduladiol) Ray florets (highest concentration) Potent anti-inflammatory and anti-edema activity; promote wound closure and tissue regeneration Chemical defense against herbivores and pathogens Flavonoids (quercetin, isorhamnetin, rutin) Flowers, leaves Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, capillary-strengthening; support venous health UV protection and pollinator signaling pigments Carotenoids (lutein, zeaxanthin, beta-carotene) Ray florets (responsible for color) Antioxidant protection for skin and eyes; support immune cell function Photosynthetic accessory pigments and UV shields Polysaccharides (heteroglycans) Flowers Immunostimulatory -- activate macrophages and enhance phagocytosis Cell wall structural components and water retention Essential oil (sesquiterpenes, monoterpenes) Glandular trichomes on flowers and stems Antimicrobial and antifungal activity; mild antispasmodic effect Antimicrobial defense and volatile signaling Calendula's therapeutic reputation rests on the synergy between these compound classes. The triterpenoids -- particularly faradiol esters -- are the primary drivers of its anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects, supported by flavonoid antioxidants that protect damaged tissue from oxidative stress, and polysaccharides that stimulate the immune system to accelerate repair. This multi-pathway approach makes calendula one of the most clinically supported herbs for topical skin care and wound management. HOW IT WORKS IN THE BODY Calendula operates through several complementary mechanisms that make it effective both topically and internally. Skin Repair and Wound Healing: Faradiol and other triterpenoid saponins stimulate collagen synthesis, promote angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation) in wound beds, and accelerate epithelialization -- the process by which new skin cells migrate across a wound surface. Clinical studies, including a 2013 trial published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, have demonstrated that calendula cream significantly reduces radiation dermatitis severity in breast cancer patients compared to standard care. The flavonoids and carotenoids contribute antioxidant protection that shields newly forming tissue from free radical damage. Anti-inflammatory Pathways: Calendula triterpenoids inhibit pro-inflammatory enzymes including lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase (COX), reducing the production of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes. This mechanism parallels the action of NSAIDs but operates through botanical compounds rather than synthetic ones. The flavonoid fraction further modulates NF-kB signaling, dampening the inflammatory cascade at the transcriptional level. Immune Modulation: The polysaccharide fraction of calendula activates macrophages and enhances granulocyte phagocytosis, stimulating the innate immune system to respond more effectively to pathogens at wound sites and mucous membranes. Internally, calendula tea or tincture supports lymphatic drainage and mild immune stimulation, contributing to its traditional use during colds, fevers, and swollen glands. Antimicrobial and Antifungal Activity: The essential oil and resinous compounds in calendula demonstrate activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus species, and Candida albicans in vitro. This antimicrobial action supports wound healing by reducing infection risk and addresses oral and vaginal candidiasis when used as a rinse or wash. DOSE GUIDELINES Preparation Type Typical Dose Purpose Herbal tea (infusion) 1-2 tablespoons dried flowers per cup, steeped 10-15 minutes, 2-3 cups daily Internal anti-inflammatory, lymphatic support, digestive soothing Tincture (1:5 in 70% ethanol) 2-4 mL, three times daily Immune support, lymphatic drainage, menstrual regulation Topical oil infusion or salve Apply liberally to affected area, 2-4 times daily Wound healing, burns, rashes, eczema, dry or cracked skin Compress or poultice Strong infusion (3 tablespoons per cup), applied warm on cloth Bruises, sprains, varicose veins, localized inflammation Calendula is one of the gentlest and safest herbs available. It is appropriate for long-term daily use both internally and externally. Topical application can begin immediately on minor wounds, and internal use can be maintained as a tonic tea throughout cold and flu season or during periods of lymphatic congestion. PREPARATION AND USES As an infusion, calendula flowers produce a golden, mildly bitter tea with a faint honey-like sweetness. Steep generously -- calendula benefits from a strong infusion and long steeping time. For topical use, the gold standard preparation is a slow oil infusion: pack dried calendula flowers into a jar, cover completely with olive oil or jojoba oil, and let steep in a warm, sunny spot for 4-6 weeks, shaking daily. Strain and use directly as a skin oil, or thicken with beeswax to create a salve. This calendula oil is one of the most versatile preparations in any home apothecary -- suitable for everything from baby skin care to post-surgical wound support. Calendula petals are also edible and make a vibrant culinary addition to salads, rice dishes, soups, and baked goods. Historically called "poor man's saffron," the petals impart a mild, slightly tangy flavor and a rich golden color to foods. Calendula can also be prepared as a mouthwash for gum inflammation, a sitz bath for postpartum healing, or a hair rinse to bring out golden highlights in light-colored hair. OPTIMAL CONTEXT FOR USE Calendula is especially well-suited for individuals experiencing: Minor wounds, cuts, scrapes, burns, or surgical incisions that need gentle, effective support for clean healing and reduced scarring Chronic skin conditions including eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, diaper rash, or cracked and chapped skin -- particularly where pharmaceutical creams have caused irritation or thinning Lymphatic congestion, swollen glands, or sluggish immune recovery during or after colds and upper respiratory infections Digestive inflammation such as gastritis, mouth ulcers (canker sores), or irritated mucous membranes of the throat and GI tract Radiation dermatitis or chemotherapy-related skin irritation, as a gentle adjunct to conventional cancer treatment (with oncologist awareness) Calendula combines beautifully with other herbs: with comfrey for deep tissue repair, with chamomile for soothing sensitive skin, with echinacea for immune support, and with lavender for burn care. SUSTAINABILITY AND ETHICAL HARVESTING Calendula is one of the most sustainable medicinal plants available. It is almost exclusively cultivated rather than wild-harvested, grows readily from seed in virtually any temperate garden, and produces abundant flowers over a long blooming season. A single planting can yield multiple harvests as deadheading encourages continuous bloom. There are no conservation concerns associated with calendula -- it is not threatened, endangered, or at risk from commercial demand. The plant is also beneficial to garden ecosystems: it attracts pollinators, repels certain pest insects through its aromatic compounds, and serves as a trap crop for aphids, drawing them away from vegetables. Growing your own calendula is one of the most rewarding entry points into home herbalism. SAFETY AND CAUTIONS Calendula has an excellent safety profile and is considered one of the safest herbs for both internal and external use across all age groups. Asteraceae allergy: Individuals with known allergies to plants in the daisy/composite family (ragweed, chrysanthemums, chamomile) should use calendula cautiously, as cross-reactivity is possible though uncommon. Pregnancy: Some traditional sources advise against internal use of calendula during pregnancy due to potential uterine-stimulating effects at high doses. Topical use is generally considered safe during pregnancy. Consult a qualified practitioner if pregnant and considering internal use. Drug interactions: Calendula may theoretically potentiate sedative medications due to mild CNS-calming effects. It may also interact with drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 enzymes. These interactions are theoretical and based on limited data, but awareness is prudent. Wound care: For deep, puncture, or heavily infected wounds, seek medical attention. Calendula is appropriate for clean, minor wounds and as an adjunct to professional wound care, not as a replacement for it. REFERENCES Preethi, K.C., Kuttan, G., & Kuttan, R.
