Marcus Meadow Sage

Marcus Meadow Sage (Salvia nemorosa 'Marcus')Marcus Meadow Sage is a compact perennial that delivers strong blue-purple color without taking over the front of the border. It blooms heavily in late spring into early summer, then can rebloom with a simple trim, keeping beds looking fresh with minimal effort. The tight clumping habit stays neat and upright, so plantings feel more structured and intentional. Pollinators visit constantly, adding movement and energy right where you see it most. Distinctive FeaturesThis dwarf meadow sage forms a dense, low mound topped with short, upright spikes of rich violet-blue flowers. The aromatic green foliage stays tidy through the season, making it a reliable edging plant even between bloom cycles. Because it is naturally compact, it holds its shape well and rarely needs staking, even in exposed sites. Mature size is typically about 10 to 12 inches tall and 10 to 12 inches wide. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun is best for sturdy stems and maximum flowering, with light shade tolerated. Soil: Well-drained soil is essential, and average garden soils work well when drainage is good. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide low to moderate moisture, watering during extended dry spells. USDA Zones: Hardy in zones 4 to 8. Mature Size: About 10 to 12 inches tall and 10 to 12 inches wide. Deer: Often deer resistant once established due to aromatic foliage. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use a tight grouping as a focal point along the front edge of a sunny bed where the blue spikes can define the design in late spring. Border Edging: Plant along paths and bed lines for a clean, compact outline that stays neat all season. Mass Planting: Repeat in drifts for a unified band of blue-purple that ties planting areas together. Pollinator Gardens: Include where you want steady bee and butterfly activity during peak bloom. Containers: Grow in pots for a tidy, upright accent that stays compact and easy to manage. Low Maintenance Care Shearing: Shear back after the first heavy bloom to encourage rebloom and maintain a tight, tidy clump. Deadheading: Remove spent spikes as needed to extend flowering and keep the plant looking fresh. Watering: Deep water during extended drought, especially in the first season and in containers. Fertilizing: Feed lightly in spring, since overly rich soil can soften growth and reduce flowering. Spring Cleanup: Cut back old stems in early spring to make room for clean new growth. Why Choose Marcus Meadow Sage? Dwarf Size: Compact growth delivers strong color in small spaces and along border edges. Rich Blue-Purple Spikes: Dense flower spikes add crisp vertical structure without getting tall or floppy. Repeat Bloom Potential: A quick trim after flowering can bring on a second flush.
