Mapping Lenapehoking

"HÈ, NULELINTÀM ÈLI PAÈKW. (WELCOME, I AM GLAD YOU ARE HERE.) NTELUWÈNSI "KIKINHÈT." KSAHKAKWENEL. (MY NAME IS "GUIDE." I AM HERE TO TAKE YOU BY THE HAND.) NISHUXWEHENA, NTACHIMWICH WASHE WEÖPSIT PÈCHI NUTXÙKHÙMËNA. (AS WE WALK TOGETHER, I WILL TELL A STORY ABOUT WHEN THE WHITE PEOPLE CAME TO US.) YUSHE TALI, LENAPEHOKING. (HERE, IN LENAPEHOKING.)" Part of a larger effort to interrogate histories of colonial dispossession and highlight Indigenous survivance in the Americas, Mapping Lenapehoking is the newest release from ATCG Books and Comics. Illustrated by Sadekaronhes Esquivel and Dale Deforest with a story by Lee Francis 4, this vibrant story follows the Lenape diaspora and paints a stunning picture of dispossession and renewal. By focusing on the colonial-era mapping of the Indigenous homelands known as Lenapehoking, we aim to deconstruct Eurocentric misrepresentations, reinscribe Lenape histories of place, and otherwise encourage more accurate understandings of Indigenous histories, here and elsewhere. Although this book offers a partially fictionalized version of regional history, it is inspired by, and includes references to, a number of well-documented statements, events and maps. The book also features an incredible resource guide making it a welcome addition for educators and historians alike!  The “Mapping Lenapehoking” project received financial support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Just Futures Initiative grant N-2009-09221 entitled “Dispossessions in the Americas: The Extraction of Bodies, Land, and Heritage from la Conquista to the Present,” administered by the University of Pennsylvania, and coordinated by Principal Investigator Tulia G. Falleti, with co-Principal Investigators: Margaret M. Bruchac, Ricardo Castillo-Neyra, Ann Farnsworth-Alvear, Michael Hanchard, Jonathan D. Katz, Richard M. Leventhal, and Michael Z. Levy.
