Manhattan Euonymus

Manhattan Euonymus (Euonymus kiautschovicus 'Manhattan')Manhattan Euonymus is a dense broadleaf evergreen shrub valued for its glossy dark green foliage, upright rounded habit, and dependable landscape structure. Its clean foliage gives foundations, hedges, screens, mixed borders, and property-edge plantings a polished look through much of the year. This adaptable shrub is useful where a medium-sized evergreen is needed for coverage, structure, and background color without a formal needle evergreen appearance. With full sun to partial shade, well-drained soil, and occasional shaping, Manhattan Euonymus brings reliable year-round presence to managed landscapes. Distinctive FeaturesManhattan Euonymus forms a dense upright to rounded shrub with glossy green leaves that create a full, clean-textured appearance. The foliage is evergreen to semi-evergreen depending on winter severity, exposure, and local climate, with the best winter appearance in protected sites. Small greenish white flowers may appear in summer and can be followed by ornamental fruit capsules that split to reveal orange to red-orange seeds. Its dense branching, tolerance of pruning, and adaptable growth make it especially useful as a hedge, screen, foundation plant, or large evergreen background shrub. Growing Conditions Sun: Grows best in full sun to partial shade, with brighter light supporting denser growth and stronger flowering. Soil: Adapts to average, well-drained soil and tolerates a range of managed landscape conditions as long as the site does not stay wet. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide supplemental water during extended dry periods to keep foliage healthy and full. USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 5 to 8, with winter protection helpful in exposed sites near the colder edge of its range. Mature Size: Typically reaches about 4 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide, with larger size possible in favorable sites or with minimal pruning. Habit: Forms a dense, upright to rounded broadleaf evergreen shrub with a full, bushy outline. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a glossy evergreen focal point in foundation beds, entry plantings, mixed borders, or courtyard gardens where clean foliage and year-round structure are needed. Hedge: Plant in a row to create a dense evergreen hedge along walkways, patios, property lines, or garden rooms. Screening: Use as a medium evergreen screen where steady foliage coverage and a manageable mature size are desired. Foundation Planting: Plant near larger foundations where an upright evergreen shrub can add structure, height, and background color. Mixed Border: Combine with flowering shrubs, perennials, ornamental grasses, and darker evergreens to provide a dependable green backdrop. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Water deeply during the first growing season to establish roots, then water during prolonged dry spells as needed. Mulching: Apply a light mulch layer around the root zone to conserve moisture and reduce weed competition while keeping mulch away from the stems. Pruning: Prune lightly in spring or after flushes of growth to maintain size, improve density, or shape the plant as a hedge. Spacing: Allow enough room for air movement and mature width, especially when planting as a screen or foundation shrub. Fertilizing: Fertilize only when needed in spring based on soil conditions, using a moderate approach that avoids excessive soft growth. Winter Care: Site out of harsh winter wind where possible to reduce foliage burn in colder or more exposed landscapes. Why Choose Manhattan Euonymus? Glossy Evergreen Foliage: Displays dark green leaves that provide clean structure and year-round color in protected landscapes. Dense Growth: Forms a full shrub that works well for hedges, screens, foundations, and background planting.
