Choose the jar calling your name before you add it to your bag. Mango on its own is sunshine you can drink. A mangonada is that same sunshine after it moved to the city and picked up some habits. Ripe mango runs with chamoy, the salty-sour red drizzle, then chile and citrus make your mouth sit up straight. Sweet, salty, sour, and a little heat, all in one swallow. Mexico looked at a perfect mango and said, we can go further. They were right. This Olvera Street counter keeps both jars in plain sight. Pick the easy golden cup or choose the one with red streaks and consequences. Either way, ask for a napkin. A LITTLE HISTORY, ON THE HOUSE Olvera Street is part of the historic heart of Los Angeles, remade in 1930 as a Mexican marketplace. Some puestos, the market stalls, are still operated by descendants of the original vendors. Almost a century at the same counter. You don't fake that kind of seniority. The fruit carts know it too.
