Mangave Praying Hands

T he Mangave ‘Praying Hands’ is a rare and easy-care succulent prized for its tightly stacked, upward-pointing leaves that resemble hands folded in prayer, which inspired its memorable common name.   This modern hybrid combines the best traits of Manfreda and Agave, creating a plant with dramatic form, excellent drought tolerance, and faster growth than traditional agaves.  The standout feature of Mangave ‘Praying Hands’ is its narrow, thick, upright leaves that grow tightly clustered in a vertical rosette, creating a striking “praying hands” silhouette. The foliage is deep green to blue-green, often heavily spotted or mottled with burgundy-purple markings inherited from its Manfreda parentage. The leaves are smooth-edged compared to many agaves, though they may have a small terminal spine, making it more user-friendly than many traditional spiny succulents.  At maturity, this compact succulent typically reaches about 18 inches tall and 18 inches wide, making it ideal for containers, tabletops, patios, and small garden spaces. Its slow-to-moderate growth rate allows it to maintain a neat, sculptural form for years.   Mature plants may eventually produce a tall flower stalk in late spring or summer, bearing clusters of small tubular greenish-white to yellow flowers that attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. When it comes to care, the Mangave ‘Praying Hands’ thrives in well-drained  succulent soil, to prevent excessive moisture. Water deeply using the soak-and-dry method, allowing the soil to dry completely before watering again. During spring and summer, water moderately; reduce significantly during winter dormancy. Indoors, it prefers temperatures between 65–85°F and bright light, ideally near a sunny south- or west-facing window. Outdoors, it grows best in USDA Zones 9–11, where it enjoys full sun to partial sun. In extremely hot climates, some afternoon shade can help prevent leaf scorch. Low to average humidity is ideal.  For best growth, feed lightly with a diluted balanced NPK fertilizer once a year during the active growing season. Pruning needs are minimal; simply remove any dried or damaged lower leaves to keep the rosette tidy. Like many succulent hybrids, Mangave ‘Praying Hands’ appreciates good airflow and should never sit in soggy soil, as overwatering can quickly lead to root rot.  The Bottom Line Overall, the Mangave ‘Praying Hands’ is that it combines the dramatic, sculptural elegance of agaves with the faster growth, colorful spotting, and softer leaf texture of Manfreda. Its unusual vertical habit makes it look almost like a living sculpture, making it an exceptional focal point in modern gardens, minimalist interiors, and collector displays. For anyone wanting a truly distinctive, low-maintenance succulent, Mangave ‘Praying Hands’ is an unforgettable choice.
