Mangave 'Blazing Saddles'

Description Light/Soil/Water Hardiness Mangave 'Blazing Saddles' is a dramatic hybrid succulent combining traits of Agave and Manfreda. It forms a large, open rosette of broad, arching leaves covered in deep burgundy to purple spotting. The foliage is thicker than Manfreda but softer and more flexible than traditional agave, making it both bold and user-friendly for home gardeners. This plant is part of the modern Mangave collection, developed through hybridization in the United States. It inherits its lineage from Agave (native to Mexico and the southwestern U.S.) and Manfreda (native to North America), combining drought tolerance with faster growth and ornamental appeal. Produces a tall central flower spike when mature. Flowers are tubular, greenish to cream or slightly yellow-toned. Blooms typically appear in summer. Flowering is infrequent in container plants. The main rosette may decline after blooming, but offsets often develop beforehand. Bold purple spotting intensifies in bright light. Broad, arching leaves create a large, sculptural rosette. Faster-growing than traditional agaves. Leaves are less rigid and safer to handle. Excellent for containers, patios, and xeriscape gardens.   Full sun to bright indirect light; best coloration and spotting develop in strong sunlight; can tolerate partial shade Water deeply but infrequently; allow soil to dry completely between watering; more forgiving than agave but still drought-tolerant Requires well-draining soil; ideal mix: cactus or succulent soil with added perlite or sand; avoid moisture-retaining soils Thrives in 15°C – 32°C (60°F – 90°F); avoid temperatures below -3°C (26°F) Moderate to fast-growing; can reach 18–24 inches wide under optimal conditions   USDA Zones 9–11; protect from frost and prolonged cold exposure
