Maker's Mark 101 Bourbon 750ML

Maker's Mark 101 Bourbon 750ML is a 101-proof (50.5% ABV) Kentucky straight bourbon in a 750ml bottle, built on Maker's Mark's signature wheated mashbill. This higher-proof expression amplifies the distillery's trademark soft, fruit-forward character while layering in bolder spice — earning an 85/100 from Whiskey for the Ages and a B+ (87–89 points) from The Whiskey Jug. Quick Facts: ABV: 50.5%  |  Origin: Loretto, Kentucky, USA  |  Aged ~6 Years  |  Distillery: Maker's Mark Distillery Production & Heritage Maker's Mark Distillery has operated in Loretto, Kentucky, since 1953, founded by Bill Samuels Sr. with the deliberate decision to swap rye for soft red winter wheat in the mashbill — a choice that defines every expression the distillery releases. The 101 uses the same 70% corn, 16% soft red winter wheat, and 14% malted barley grain bill as the original, aged approximately six years in charred American oak barrels. What distinguishes the production further is Maker's Mark's practice of hand-rotating barrels from upper to lower levels of their aging warehouses, a labor-intensive step that evens out temperature variation and ensures a more consistent flavor profile across batches — a method few bourbon distilleries employ at scale. Tasting Notes Aroma: Ripe stone fruit and blackberry jam lead the nose, followed by brown sugar and a citrus top note reminiscent of fresh orange peel. Underneath, there's a warm, bakery-like quality — think banana bread cooling on a counter. Taste: The entry is rich and creamy, with chewy caramel and dark fruit arriving immediately. At mid-palate, the 101 proof asserts itself with baking spice and a subtle pepper warmth, though the wheated mashbill keeps everything rounded rather than sharp. The higher proof pushes flavors that can feel muted in the standard 90-proof expression squarely into the foreground — cocktail cherries, toasted oak, and a vein of brown sugar that runs the length of the palate. Finish: Medium-long, mellow, and notably creamy, with lingering caramel sweetness and a gentle spice fade. The wheat influence is most apparent here, leaving a soft, pleasant warmth rather than a hot, grain-forward close. How to Drink Maker's Mark 101 Neat or with a few drops of water is the most rewarding way to experience the interplay of fruit, caramel, and proof-driven spice; the extra ABV holds up well to a single large ice cube without washing out. At 101 proof, it's also a powerhouse in cocktails: try it in a Whiskey Sour, where the wheated sweetness balances citrus without needing extra sugar; in an Old Fashioned, where the caramel and dark fruit notes pair naturally with bitters and an orange twist; or in a Kentucky Mule, where the higher proof cuts through ginger beer and lime with authority. How does Maker's Mark 101 compare to Wild Turkey 101? Wild Turkey 101 uses a high-rye mashbill, which produces a spicier, more assertive bourbon, while Maker's Mark 101 is softer and more fruit-forward due to its wheat-based recipe. Both sit at 101 proof, but the flavor profiles are notably different — Maker's Mark leans sweet and creamy, Wild Turkey leans bold and peppery. Is Maker's Mark 101 good for sipping neat? Yes — the wheated mashbill keeps the 50.5% ABV approachable and smooth, making it a comfortable neat pour for anyone accustomed to bourbon in the 90–110 proof range. Where is Maker's Mark 101 made? Maker's Mark 101 positions as a mid-shelf bourbon that delivers proof and flavor complexity above its entry-level sibling at a modest premium, making it strong competition in the crowded 100-proof value tier. Why Maker's Mark 101? The 101-proof category is dominated by rye-recipe bourbons, which makes Maker's Mark 101 a genuine outlier — it's one of the few widely available wheated bourbons bottled at this proof point. The hand-rotation of barrels during aging is a tangible production commitment that translates to batch-to-batch consistency, a claim backed by the distillery's long-standing reputation. At roughly six years of age and 50.5% ABV, it strikes a balance between the mellow approachability of the original Maker's Mark and the barrel-strength intensity of Maker's Mark Cask Strength, filling a gap in the lineup that rewards both neat sipping and serious cocktail work.
