Every catalytic lamp does the same thing: two minutes of flame heats a stone, you blow the flame out, and the stone spends the next half hour destroying the odor in the room instead of perfuming over it. What makes this one different is where it goes and what is in it. It is round and low rather than square, so it sits on a nightstand or a bathroom shelf without looking like an ornament that got left there — and the bottle in the box is Lavender Fields, which is the one fragrance people buy for a reason other than how the lamp looks. Real lavender, not soap lavender Most things labeled lavender smell like laundry aisle. This one opens green and sharp on eucalyptus, pear and camphor, comes through the middle on true Provençal lavender, and settles on balm and soft woods. Aromatic and clean rather than powdery, and it is the reason to put this one in a bedroom. Round, and made to be seen through Thick clear violet glass with a slim silver top, and the cord inside is dyed violet to match rather than left white. Because the glass is clear you always know how much fragrance is left, and the color is doing the decorating — this is a lamp that looks deliberate on a nightstand where a white cube looks like a candle somebody forgot. It clears the air first The burner holds a catalytic stone that runs flameless once hot, pulling room air through and breaking down the molecules that actually smell — damp, pets, smoke, a bedroom that has been shut all day. The lavender is the second half of the job, not the whole of it. What is in the box The Pure Violet lamp — clear violet glass, 5.1 inches tall, holding up to 290 ml (9.8 fl oz) The wick burner and its catalytic stone — the part that does the odor work, with a violet cord to match the glass The shiny silver diffuser cap — goes on once the flame is out, so the fragrance spreads instead of shooting straight up The stopper cap — seals the lamp between uses so the fragrance does not evaporate away The refill funnel — small, and the reason you will not spill any 180 ml (6.08 fl oz) of Lavender Fields — genuine Maison Berger fragrance, made in France We sell three of these lamps — this is how they differ They all work identically and they are all $49.99. What you are really choosing is the shape, the color and what is in the bottle. This violet one is the bedroom answer — round, low, and lavender. The frosted cube is the neutral one that goes anywhere and hides everything inside it. The blue cube is for a kitchen or a shelf that wants some color. There is also a Festive Fir set in a snowflake gift box if you are buying a Christmas present. How to run it, and the step nearly everybody skips Fill the lamp about two thirds full with the funnel. Not to the brim — the burner sits down into the fragrance and needs the room. The clear glass makes two thirds easy to see. Drop the burner in, put the stopper cap on, and leave it twenty minutes. The wick has to draw fragrance the whole way up to the stone. This is the step people skip, and skipping it is behind almost every complaint anyone has about a catalytic lamp. Light the burner and let it burn two to three minutes. Enough to bring the stone up to temperature. Longer and you start scorching the ceramic. Blow the flame out. The lamp is now working — no flame, no cord, no noise. Fit the silver diffuser cap and leave it twenty to thirty minutes. That handles a normal room. Forty-five minutes is the most you ever need. Snuff it, let it cool, and put the stopper cap back on. The room goes on smelling of lavender for hours after the lamp has stopped. If a brand new lamp will not stay lit, it is thirsty, not broken A dry wick drinks a surprising amount before there is anything at the stone to burn. Cap it, give it another twenty minutes, and try again rather than reaching for the lighter a third time. Once it has lit properly the first time it never argues again. Read this before the first use The fragrance is alcohol based and there is a live flame for the first couple of minutes, so treat it like any open flame. Never leave it burning unattended, keep it clear of curtains and bedding, and keep it out of reach of children and pets. Never move the lamp while the burner is hot, and never refill one that is still warm. Because this is a bedroom lamp it is worth saying plainly: run it for twenty to thirty minutes and snuff it out before you go to sleep. It is not something to leave going overnight. Maison Berger also advise against use around infants under three, during pregnancy, or around anyone whose immune system is compromised, and it should not be used in a room with birds or fish. What a fragrance lamp will not do Worth being straight about, because it saves a disappointed phone call. This is very good at the smells that live in the air — damp, pets, smoke, a room that has been shut up all day. It is not a filter. If the problem is dust, pollen or dander, or somebody in the house is genuinely allergic, that is a job for an air purifier and a vacuum that seals properly, and no fragrance will help. And if the smell is coming out of the carpet or the mattress rather than the air, deal with that first — an enzyme treatment on a pet accident, or a pass with Fresh Wave vacuum beads — then let the lamp finish the room. No, and it is the one rule worth repeating on a bedroom lamp. Run it for twenty to thirty minutes, snuff it, and let it cool. The room holds the scent for hours afterward, so you get the benefit all night without anything being alight while you are asleep. Does lavender actually help with sleep? People have believed so for a very long time and plenty of small studies have looked at it, but we are a vacuum shop and we are not going to make a health claim. What we will say is that it is the scent customers ask for by name for bedrooms, and that this is proper aromatic lavender rather than the soapy kind. How is this different from the cube lamps you sell? Only in shape, color and what is in the bottle. Same burner, same accessories, same way of working, same price. Round and low suits a nightstand; a cube suits a counter or a shelf. The bottle here is lavender rather than the marine Ocean Breeze. Does the flame stay lit the whole time? No. The flame is only there for two or three minutes to heat the catalytic stone, then you blow it out and the lamp works flameless. Leaving the flame going scorches the ceramic and shortens the burner’s life for no benefit. How long will the 180 ml bottle last? It depends how often you light it, since each use is only twenty to thirty minutes. A few evenings a week gets you a couple of months from this bottle. The lamp itself holds up to 290 ml, so a bigger refill fits comfortably later. Can I put a different scent in it? Yes — the lamp is permanent, the fragrance is the consumable. Burn it down close to empty first so the old scent does not muddy the new one. We stock the 500 ml refills in thirteen scents, including So Neutral, which clears the odor and leaves nothing behind at all. Do you sell Lavender Fields on its own? Not on the shelf at the moment, though it is one of Maison Berger’s standard fragrances and we can order it. Call or text 888-565-6163 and we will get it in with your next refill. How often does the burner need replacing? Roughly once a year in normal use — Maison Berger reckon about 200 uses. You will know because the lamp gets harder to light and the scent goes thin. A genuine Air Pur 3P burner brings it back for a fraction of a new lamp. Can I return it if I do not like the scent? No. These sets are a final sale and cannot be returned or exchanged, because the fragrance is a flammable liquid and cannot be shipped back to us. That is exactly why it is worth a phone call first if you are torn between scents — call or text 888-565-6163, tell us the room, and we will say honestly which one people come back for. Not sure which of the three to get? Call or text 888-565-6163 and tell us the room. They all work the same way, so it comes down to where it is going and what you want it to smell of — a thirty-second conversation rather than a guess.
