Ocean Breeze is the one people buy for themselves. Every catalytic lamp does the same job — it destroys the odor in the room rather than covering it — but the fragrance decides whether the lamp lives on the counter all year or comes out of the cupboard for two weeks in December. This one is fresh and marine with a soft floral middle, it does not read as a season or a holiday, and it is the scent to reach for in a kitchen, a bathroom, a pet room or a house that has been shut up all week. The stone is the whole point Inside the burner is a catalytic stone. Two minutes of flame brings it up to temperature, then you blow the flame out and the stone keeps going on its own — pulling room air through and oxidizing the molecules that smell, with the fragrance riding out behind them. That is why a kitchen that smelled of fried fish ends up smelling of nothing, and then of sea air, rather than of fish and sea air at once. Fresh, not sweet Ocean Breeze opens on rose, blackcurrant and clean marine notes, softens through jasmine and lily of the valley, and settles on white musk, amber and warm exotic wood. It is a light, bright, moving-air kind of scent — nothing gourmand, nothing floral-heavy, and nothing that fights with food. It belongs to Maison Berger’s Dreams of Freshness family. Nothing else to buy The lamp on its own is only half a purchase — it still needs a burner and a bottle before it can be used. This box has both, plus the diffuser cap, the stopper and the funnel. Open it and you can run it that evening, which is exactly what you want if it is a present or a first lamp. What is in the box The frosted Ice Cube lamp — heavy frosted glass, roughly 5½ inches tall with its cap on, plain enough to leave out anywhere The wick burner and its catalytic stone — the part that destroys the odor; everything else is a container for it The shiny silver diffuser cap — goes on after the flame is out so the fragrance spreads across the room instead of shooting straight up The stopper cap — seals the lamp between uses so the fragrance does not quietly evaporate away in the cupboard The refill funnel — small, and the reason you will not spill any 180 ml (6.08 fl oz) of Ocean Breeze — the genuine Maison Berger fragrance, made in France Ocean Breeze or Festive Fir — we sell the same lamp twice It is worth saying plainly, because it saves a phone call: both of our gift sets contain the identical frosted Ice Cube lamp, the identical burner and the identical accessories. The only real difference is what is in the bottle and what the box looks like. Ocean Breeze Lamp Set $49.99 Best for most homes Festive Fir Lamp Set $49.99 How it smells Fresh and marine, light florals Pine needles, eucalyptus, cedarwood When you would run it All year, every room October through the winter Fragrance in the box 180 ml (6.08 fl oz) 250 ml (8.45 fl oz) The box itself Plain Maison Berger carton Snowflake gift box, ready to hand over The lamp inside Frosted Ice Cube Frosted Ice Cube — the same one Buy this one if the lamp is going to live somewhere and get used — the kitchen counter, the hallway, the room the dog sleeps in. Buy the Festive Fir set if it is going under a tree, because the holiday carton is a gift box and this one is a shipping carton. Whichever you pick, the lamp is the same and it will run any Maison Berger fragrance afterwards. If frosted white is not the look you want, this same cube also comes in clear petrol blue with the same Ocean Breeze bottle, and there is a round Pure Violet lamp with Lavender Fields for a bedroom — both $49.99. How to run it, and the one step nearly everybody skips Fill the lamp about two thirds full with the funnel. Not to the brim — the burner sits down into the fragrance and needs the room. Drop the burner in, put the stopper cap on, and walk away for twenty minutes. The wick has to draw fragrance the whole way up to the stone. This is the step people skip, and skipping it is behind almost every complaint anyone has about a catalytic lamp. Light the burner and let it burn two to three minutes. That is enough to bring the stone up to temperature. Longer and you start scorching the ceramic. Blow the flame out. The lamp is now working. No flame, no cord, no noise — the stone stays hot by itself. Fit the silver diffuser cap and leave it twenty to thirty minutes. That handles a normal room. Forty-five minutes is the most you ever need; past that you are only using fragrance up. Snuff it, let it cool, and put the stopper cap back on. The room goes on smelling of it for hours after the lamp has stopped. If a brand new lamp will not stay lit, it is thirsty, not broken A dry wick drinks a surprising amount before there is anything at the stone to burn. Cap it, give it another twenty minutes, and try again rather than reaching for the lighter a third time. Once it has lit properly the first time it never argues again. Read this before the first use The fragrance is alcohol based and there is a live flame for the first couple of minutes, so treat it like any open flame. Never leave it burning unattended, keep it well clear of curtains and paper, and keep it out of reach of children and pets. Never move the lamp while the burner is hot, and never refill one that is still warm. Maison Berger advise against running a lamp around infants under three, during pregnancy, or around anyone whose immune system is compromised, and it should not be used in a room with birds or fish — both are far more sensitive to anything airborne than we are. Run it twenty to thirty minutes in a room that is not sealed shut and it is a well-behaved thing. What a fragrance lamp will not do This is worth being straight about. A Maison Berger lamp is very good at the smells that live in the air — cooking, damp, smoke, pets, the staleness of a house nobody has opened in a week. It is not a filter. If the problem is dust, pollen or dander, or anybody in the house is genuinely allergic, that is a job for an air purifier and a vacuum that seals properly, and no fragrance of any kind will help. And if the smell is coming out of the carpet rather than out of the air, deal with the carpet first — an enzyme treatment on a pet accident, or a pass with Fresh Wave vacuum beads for general carpet odor — then let the lamp finish the room. No, and this is the one thing to get right. The flame is only there for two or three minutes to heat the catalytic stone. Then you blow it out and the lamp does its entire job flameless. Leaving the flame burning scorches the ceramic and shortens the burner’s life for no benefit at all. How long does the 180 ml bottle last? It depends on how often you light it, because each use is only twenty to thirty minutes. Somebody running it a few evenings a week will get a couple of months out of this bottle. When it runs low the lamp is not finished — you just refill it, and a bigger bottle is cheaper per ounce. Can I put a different scent in this lamp later? Yes. The lamp is the permanent part and the fragrance is the consumable, so it will run any Maison Berger fragrance. Let it burn down close to empty first so the old scent does not muddy the new one. We stock the 500 ml refills in thirteen scents, including So Neutral, which clears the odor and leaves no fragrance behind at all. Do you sell Ocean Breeze on its own? Not on the shelf at the moment — our 500 ml refill range covers thirteen other scents. Ocean Breeze is one of Maison Berger’s regular fragrances and we can get it in for you, so call or text 888-565-6163 and we will order it with your next refill. How often does the burner need replacing? Roughly once a year in normal use — Maison Berger reckon about 200 uses. You will know when it is due, because the lamp gets harder to light and the scent goes thin. A genuine Air Pur 3P burner brings it straight back and costs a fraction of a new lamp. Will it work on cooking smells and pet smells? That is what it is best at. Those are odor molecules floating in the air, which is exactly what the catalytic stone destroys. Run it in the room while you clear up after dinner and the smell is gone rather than layered over. What it cannot do is fix a smell that is soaked into a carpet or a sofa — that has to come out of the fabric first. Is it safe around cats and dogs? Used sensibly, yes — twenty to thirty minutes in a room they can walk out of, with the hot lamp somewhere a tail cannot reach it. Birds and fish are the real exception and you should not run it in a room with either, because both are far more sensitive to anything airborne than mammals are. Is this a good first lamp for somebody who has never used one? It is the easiest way in, because every part is in the box and Ocean Breeze is about as widely liked as a house fragrance gets. The one kindness you can do is pass on the twenty-minute soak before the first light, since that is the only thing about a new lamp that catches anyone out. Can I return it if I do not like the scent? No. These sets are a final sale and cannot be returned or exchanged, because the fragrance is a flammable liquid and cannot be shipped back to us. That is exactly why it is worth a phone call first if you are torn between scents — call or text 888-565-6163, tell us the room, and we will say honestly which one people come back for. Not sure it is the right answer for your room? Call or text 888-565-6163 and tell us the room and the smell. We will say honestly whether this is the fix, whether you want an air purifier instead, or whether the real job is getting the smell out of the carpet first. We would rather sell you the right thing once.
