This is the same lamp as our frosted Ice Cube and it runs the same way — light it for two minutes, blow the flame out, and the hot catalytic stone spends the next half hour destroying the odor in the room rather than perfuming over the top of it. What changes here is the glass. Clear petrol blue instead of frosted white, so the light goes through it, the white braided wick shows as part of the design, and you can see at a glance how much fragrance is left. If a white lamp would disappear on your shelf, this is the one that will not. You can see the working parts Frosted glass hides the wick. Clear blue glass shows it — the white braided cord coils down through the fragrance and it is genuinely nice to look at. It also means you never have to guess whether the lamp is nearly empty, which is the small daily annoyance of every frosted or opaque lamp ever made. It removes the odor first The burner holds a catalytic stone. Once it is up to temperature it runs with no flame at all, pulling room air through and breaking down the molecules that smell — cooking, damp, smoke, litter box, wet dog. The fragrance rides out behind them. That order is the whole difference between this and an aerosol. Ocean Breeze suits every month Rose, blackcurrant and clean marine notes to open, jasmine and lily of the valley through the middle, then white musk, amber and warm wood underneath. Light and moving rather than sweet, and it does not fight with food — which is why it is the one to put in a kitchen. What is in the box The blue Ice Cube lamp — clear petrol-blue glass, about 5½ inches tall with its cap on The wick burner and its catalytic stone — the part that does the odor work; everything else holds it up The shiny silver diffuser cap — goes on once the flame is out, so the fragrance spreads instead of shooting straight up The stopper cap — seals the lamp between uses so the fragrance does not evaporate away in the cupboard The refill funnel — small, and the reason you will not spill any 180 ml (6.08 fl oz) of Ocean Breeze — genuine Maison Berger fragrance, made in France We sell three of these lamps — this is how they differ They all work identically and they are all $49.99. What you are actually choosing is the shape, the color and what is in the bottle. Ice Cube Blue $49.99 Ice Cube Frosted $49.99 Pure Violet $49.99 Shape Square cube Square cube Round The glass Clear petrol blue Frosted white Clear violet Can you see how much is left Yes No Yes Fragrance in the box Ocean Breeze, 180 ml Ocean Breeze, 180 ml Lavender Fields, 180 ml How it smells Fresh and marine Fresh and marine Lavender, eucalyptus, pear Pick on the room, not on the specification, because the machinery is the same in all three. The frosted cube is the safe one — it goes with anything and hides everything. This blue one is for a kitchen, a bathroom or a shelf that needs some color in it. The Pure Violet is the bedroom one, because it is round and low and because lavender is the scent people run at night. There is also a Festive Fir set in a snowflake gift box if you are buying a present for Christmas. How to run it, and the step nearly everybody skips Fill the lamp about two thirds full with the funnel. Not to the brim — the burner sits down into the fragrance and needs the room. With clear glass you can see exactly where two thirds is, which is one of the quiet advantages of this one. Drop the burner in, put the stopper cap on, and leave it twenty minutes. The wick has to draw fragrance the whole way up to the stone. This is the step people skip, and skipping it is behind almost every complaint anyone has about a catalytic lamp. Light the burner and let it burn two to three minutes. Enough to bring the stone up to temperature. Longer and you start scorching the ceramic. Blow the flame out. The lamp is now working — no flame, no cord, no noise. The stone stays hot on its own. Fit the silver diffuser cap and leave it twenty to thirty minutes. That handles a normal room. Forty-five minutes is the most you ever need. Snuff it, let it cool, and put the stopper cap back on. The room goes on smelling of it for hours after the lamp has stopped. If a brand new lamp will not stay lit, it is thirsty, not broken A dry wick drinks a surprising amount before there is anything at the stone to burn. Cap it, give it another twenty minutes, and try again rather than reaching for the lighter a third time. Once it has lit properly the first time it never argues again. Read this before the first use The fragrance is alcohol based and there is a live flame for the first couple of minutes, so treat it like any open flame. Never leave it burning unattended, keep it clear of curtains and paper, and keep it out of reach of children and pets. Never move the lamp while the burner is hot, and never refill one that is still warm. Maison Berger advise against running a lamp around infants under three, during pregnancy, or around anyone whose immune system is compromised, and it should not be used in a room with birds or fish — both are far more sensitive to anything airborne than we are. Twenty to thirty minutes at a time, in a room that is not sealed shut, and it is a well-behaved thing. What a fragrance lamp will not do Worth being straight about, because it saves a disappointed phone call. This is very good at the smells that live in the air — cooking, damp, smoke, pets, a house nobody has opened all week. It is not a filter. If the problem is dust, pollen or dander, or somebody in the house is genuinely allergic, that is a job for an air purifier and a vacuum that seals properly, and no fragrance of any kind will help. And if the smell is coming out of the carpet rather than the air, deal with the carpet first — an enzyme treatment on a pet accident, or a pass with Fresh Wave vacuum beads — then let the lamp finish the room. No. Same lamp, same burner, same accessories, same fragrance in the box, same price. The glass is the only thing that changes — clear blue instead of frosted white, so you can see the wick and the fragrance level. Does the flame stay lit the whole time? No, and this is the one thing to get right. The flame is only there for two or three minutes to heat the catalytic stone, then you blow it out and the lamp does its whole job flameless. Leaving it burning scorches the ceramic and shortens the burner’s life for no benefit. Does the blue glass get hot? The glass stays cool enough to handle; it is the metal burner and its collar at the top that get hot, and they stay hot for a while after you snuff it. Do not move the lamp by the top, and let it cool fully before you refill it. How long will the 180 ml bottle last? It depends how often you light it, because each use is only twenty to thirty minutes. A few evenings a week will get you a couple of months out of this bottle. When it runs low the lamp is not finished — you just refill it, and a bigger bottle works out cheaper per ounce. Can I put a different scent in it later? Yes. The lamp is the permanent part and the fragrance is the consumable, so it runs any Maison Berger fragrance. Let it burn down close to empty first so the old scent does not muddy the new one. We stock the 500 ml refills in thirteen scents, including So Neutral, which clears the odor and leaves no fragrance at all. Do you sell Ocean Breeze on its own? Not on the shelf right now — our 500 ml range covers thirteen other scents. Ocean Breeze is one of Maison Berger’s standard fragrances and we can get it in, so call or text 888-565-6163 and we will add it to your next refill order. How often does the burner need replacing? About once a year in normal use — Maison Berger reckon roughly 200 uses. You will know, because the lamp gets harder to light and the scent goes thin. A genuine Air Pur 3P burner brings it straight back for a fraction of a new lamp. Will it work on cooking smells and pet smells? That is what it is best at — those are odor molecules floating in the air, which is exactly what the catalytic stone destroys. Run it while you clear up after dinner and the smell is gone rather than layered over. What it cannot fix is a smell soaked into carpet or upholstery; that has to come out of the fabric first. Can I return it if I do not like the scent? No. These sets are a final sale and cannot be returned or exchanged, because the fragrance is a flammable liquid and cannot be shipped back to us. That is exactly why it is worth a phone call first if you are torn between scents — call or text 888-565-6163, tell us the room, and we will say honestly which one people come back for. Not sure which of the three to get? Call or text 888-565-6163 and tell us the room. They all work the same, so it comes down to where it is going and what you want it to smell of — and that is a thirty-second conversation rather than a guess.
