A Brief History of the Maine State Flag Adopted: June 16, 1909 The coat of arms of the State of Maine is placed on a blue field of the same shade of blue in the flag of the United States. Adopted by the Legislature of 1909. Motto: Dirigo (I lead) Maine's state flag has its origins in the years following statehood. Maine was admitted to the Union in 1820, but the state did not adopt an official flag for nearly a century. The 1901 Flag — Maine's first official state flag was adopted in 1901. It featured a buff (cream-colored) background with the state coat of arms at the center and a pine tree and North Star in the corners. This design was relatively simple and reflected the symbolic elements already associated with Maine. The 1909 Redesign — The current flag was adopted on February 23, 1909, replacing the earlier version. It follows the common "blue field" pattern used by many U.S. states: a dark blue background bearing the state coat of arms at its center. The coat of arms depicts a moose resting beneath a pine tree, a farmer and a sailor standing as supporters on either side, and the North Star above with the state motto Dirigo ("I lead" or "I direct") on a ribbon below. A decorative border of laurel and blueberry completes the design. Symbolism — The moose and pine tree represent Maine's wilderness and natural resources. The farmer and sailor nod to the state's agricultural and maritime heritage. The North Star reinforces the motto Dirigo, signaling Maine's aspiration to be a guiding light — apt for a state at the northeastern tip of the nation. Modern Reform Efforts — In recent decades, Maine has been part of a broader national conversation about state flag design. Flag enthusiasts and vexillologists (flag scholars) frequently criticize "seal-on-a-bedsheet" designs like Maine's for being too complex and difficult to recognize at a distance. There have been periodic proposals to adopt a simpler, more distinctive design — often featuring just a green pine tree on a white or blue field — but as of 2026, the 1909 flag remains the official state flag.
