Magic Carpet Spirea

Magic Carpet Spirea (Spiraea japonica 'Walbuma')Magic Carpet Spirea is a compact, mounded shrub that keeps landscape beds bright and colorful from spring through fall. New growth starts in warm red and orange tones, then matures to golden yellow foliage that holds well through summer. In early to mid summer, clusters of rosy pink flowers add another layer of color and bring in pollinators. It stays manageable, performs reliably in sun, and is an easy way to add long-season interest without constant upkeep. Distinctive FeaturesThis Japanese spirea is known for its strong foliage progression, with vivid red new growth transitioning to bright golden yellow leaves that create a clean, high-contrast look in mixed plantings. Flat-topped flower clusters bloom in rosy pink shades during summer, and a light trim after the first flush can encourage additional bloom and fresh foliage color. The habit is dense and low mounded, making it especially effective for edging and mass plantings. Fall color often shifts toward orange and red tones, extending the show into cooler weather. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun for best foliage color and flowering, with part sun tolerated. Soil: Average, well-drained soil, adaptable to many garden soils when drainage is reasonable. Water: Medium moisture, water regularly to establish, then water during extended dry periods as needed. USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 4 to 8. Mature Size: Typically 1.5 to 2 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. Habit: Dense, compact, and low mounded. Bloom Season: Early to mid summer. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a low focal point where the red-to-gold foliage shift can lead the front of a sunny bed and hold attention all season. Edging: Line walkways and bed fronts for a tidy border that stays compact and colorful. Mass Planting: Plant in drifts to create a bright, uniform ribbon of foliage with summer bloom accents. Foundation Planting: Place along foundations where a low mound adds structure without blocking windows. Mixed Borders: Combine with dark evergreens, purple foliage shrubs, or blue-toned perennials to sharpen contrast and add depth. Low Maintenance Care Pruning: Shear lightly after flowering to encourage fresh growth, maintain a tight mound, and promote repeat bloom in many settings. Renewal: In late winter to early spring, remove a few older stems at the base to refresh vigor and keep the plant full. Watering: Water consistently during the first growing season, then water during prolonged drought to reduce stress. Fertilizing: Feed lightly in spring only if needed, because excess fertility can reduce flowering and loosen habit. Mulching: Mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds, keeping mulch pulled back from the stems. Why Choose Magic Carpet Spirea? Season-Long Foliage Color: New growth starts red and orange, then matures to bright gold for summer. Rosy Pink Bloom: Summer flower clusters add another layer of color and support pollinators.
