Magic Carpet Creeping Thyme

Magic Carpet Creeping Thyme (Thymus serpyllum 'Magic Carpet')Magic Carpet Creeping Thyme is a low, stepable groundcover that turns sunny gaps into a fragrant, living carpet. It stays tight and tidy, making paths, edging, and rock garden pockets look finished without constant trimming. In late spring into summer, it covers itself in magenta-pink flowers that brighten the garden and pull in pollinators. Once established, it handles heat and dry spells well as long as the soil drains quickly. Distinctive FeaturesThis creeping thyme forms dense mats of tiny, deep green, aromatic leaves and spreads to fill in seams between stones and along borders. The plant produces a heavy bloom of small magenta-pink flowers from late spring into early to mid-summer, creating a colorful blanket over the foliage. It tolerates light to moderate foot traffic, releasing a pleasant herbal scent when brushed or stepped on. The evergreen habit and tight growth make it a dependable year-round edging and ground-layer plant in many climates. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun for best density and flowering. Soil: Well-drained, sandy or gritty soil, and avoid soggy sites. Water: Low to medium, water to establish, then let soil dry between waterings. USDA Zones: 4 to 9. Mature Size: About 1 to 2 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide. Notable Traits: Evergreen, aromatic foliage, drought tolerant once established, and supports pollinators. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Fill a small paver seam area with a dense patch so the magenta bloom becomes a spring focal point right underfoot. Between Pavers: Plant in joints of stepping stones where it can take occasional foot traffic and release fragrance. Border Edging: Use as a crisp, low edging that stays tight and reduces the need for mulched bare strips. Rock Gardens: Tuck into gravel and stone pockets to soften hard surfaces with evergreen texture. Groundcover: Mass on sunny slopes and lean beds to cover soil and reduce weeds with a low profile. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Water regularly the first season, then water only during extended drought once established. Shearing: Shear lightly after flowering to keep the mat dense and encourage fresh growth. Weed Control: Keep young plantings weed-free until the mat closes and suppresses competition. Drainage: Improve heavy soils with grit or plant in raised areas to prevent winter wetness problems. Traffic Management: Allow occasional walking, but avoid constant heavy traffic that can thin the mat. Why Choose Magic Carpet Creeping Thyme? Stepable Groundcover: Handles occasional foot traffic, making it ideal for paths and paver joints. Magenta Bloom: Creates a vivid flower carpet from late spring into summer. Fragrant Foliage: Aromatic leaves add sensory value every time you brush past it. Waterwise Performance: Drought tolerant once established in well-drained soil. Clean, Low Habit: Stays compact and tidy, making designs look finished and intentional. If you want a tough, fragrant groundcover that stays low and blooms hard, Magic Carpet Creeping Thyme is a smart choice for sunny, well-drained spots. Give it sharp drainage and a good first season, then enjoy a dense mat that looks clean through the year. Plant it in repeating patches for the strongest carpet effect and the most consistent color.
