What unfolded was one of the most remarkable of dramatic sea rescues and, ultimately, led to a multi-year legal battle and the largest monetary salvage award in recorded history. With the help of the tanker skipper's memories and the court transcripts the author presents a fascinating story of seamanship, heroism, and contemporary legal systems.Matthew P. Murphy SMACKS AND SMACKSMEN OF ESSEX Once, East Coast oysters were the food of everyman in the southeast corner of British Isles, today they are items of delicacy, sold at once unimagined prices in the fish restaurants and seafood bars of the capital city. With the decline of stocks has come the inevitable decline in the boats and working communities that depend upon the harvest. Tom Cunliffe considers the history, tools and men of a noble, albeit simple, profession.Tom Cunliffe THE AMERICAN MEGAYACHTS In the second half of the nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth, American harbours witnessed the emergence of a new breed of yacht and a new breed of owner. The "Robber Barons" had arrived; their money and influence attracted myriad American designers who produced some of the most incredible "megayachts" the world has ever seen.Llewellyn Howland III STAD AMSTERDAM In 1999, for the first time in 100 years, a new clipper ship was launched into Dutch waters. A three-masted, fully-rigged ship, Stad Amsterdam was not a replica but was built on the lines of the magnificent Dutch clippers of the latter half of the nineteenth century. The author tells the story of the ship's design and construction, placing it in the context of past Dutch shipbuilding, and sails as a crewmember on the ship's first transatlantic voyage from Holland to the West Indies.Ron de Vos PETER ANSON Peter Anson did more to record the lives and ways of pre-World War II Scottish fisherman than any other man. Born into a naval family in southern England, in his adult years he lived and worked among the small close-knit communities of the Scottish East Coast and his books and pictures - as much records of social history as maritime studies - are as relevant and highly regarded today as they have ever been.Colin Palmer and Peter Quartermaine     ———————————————————— “Your downloads are ready” will be the subject line of an email you’ll receive from us—once we’ve processed your digital order.
