Lyrical Blues Meadow Sage

Lyrical Blues Meadow Sage (Salvia x nemorosa 'Balyriclu') Lyrical Blues Meadow Sage delivers rich blue-purple flower spikes that bring crisp structure and long-season color to sunny beds. It blooms heavily in late spring and early summer, then responds well to a quick cutback for strong repeat flowering later in the season. The compact, clumping habit stays tidy, making it easy to repeat along borders for a clean, designed look. Pollinators find it quickly, so it adds both color and garden activity with minimal effort. Distinctive Features This meadow sage forms dense, upright spires of blue to violet-blue flowers held above aromatic green foliage, creating a strong vertical accent without looking stiff. The plant maintains a uniform, mounded clump that stays neat through bloom and rebloom cycles, especially when trimmed after the first flush. Flowering typically begins in late spring and can continue in waves into summer with grooming. Mature size is commonly about 18 to 24 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun is best for sturdy stems and maximum bloom, with light shade tolerated. Soil: Well-drained soil is essential, and it adapts to average garden soils when drainage is good. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide low to moderate moisture, watering during extended dry spells. USDA Zones: Hardy in zones 4 to 9. Mature Size: About 18 to 24 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Plant a small grouping as a focal point where the blue spikes can anchor a sunny bed from late spring into summer. Border Structure: Use in the front to middle of borders to add clean vertical lines and keep mixed plantings from looking flat. Mass Planting: Repeat in drifts for a unified band of blue-purple color that ties multiple garden areas together. Pollinator Gardens: Include where you want consistent bee and butterfly activity during the main bloom window. Containers: Grow in large pots for a tidy, upright accent that blooms strongly with simple care. Low Maintenance Care Shearing: Shear back after the first heavy bloom to encourage rebloom and a tighter, cleaner clump. Deadheading: Remove spent spikes as needed to extend flowering and keep the plant looking fresh. Watering: Deep water during extended drought, especially in the first season and in containers. Fertilizing: Feed lightly in spring, since overly rich soil can reduce flowering and soften growth. Spring Cleanup: Cut back old stems in early spring to make room for clean new growth. Why Choose Lyrical Blues Meadow Sage? Rich Blue Color: Blue-purple spikes add depth that pairs well with both warm and cool color palettes. Repeat Bloom: A quick cutback after flowering helps deliver a strong second flush. Tidy Habit: Compact, clump-forming growth stays neat and easy to place in residential borders. Pollinator Value: Flower spikes support bees and butterflies through peak bloom periods. Reliable Performance: Strong garden durability in sun and well-drained soil with straightforward care. Lyrical Blues Meadow Sage is an easy way to add structure, long-season color, and pollinator value without creating extra work.
