A wash of variegate purples & pinks tinged with moss green, this is honestly the purple of my dreams! If you’ve been to Iceland in early summer, you’ve seen the lupine bloom. I did not get there early enough to appreciate it, but I thought the story of this flower was really fascinating and wanted to include it for that reason. The lupine is not actually native to Iceland—the variety that grows there is called the Alaskan Lupine and was introduced as part of a revegetation project in the 1940s. (Side note: did you know Iceland used to have forests!? The trees were mostly cut down centuries ago, and there are also ongoing efforts to replace those today.) The Icelandic name for lupine is úlfabaunir, or “wolf beans,” and though no one calls it that in real life, I thought it was too good of a name not to mention!
