Lunare Wrasse

The Lunare Wrasse, Thalassoma lunare, also known as the Moon Wrasse or Lyretail Wrasse, is a brilliantly colored and exceptionally active saltwater fish. Adults develop deep green to blue coloration with vivid pink-to-violet facial markings, blue-edged fins, and a distinctive yellow crescent across the lyre-shaped tail. Large terminal males become especially striking, with intense blue coloration across the head grading into green along the body. Native to the Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa eastward to the Line Islands, and from southern Japan south to Lord Howe Island and northern New Zealand, this species inhabits shallow lagoons, coastal reefs, and protected seaward reefs. It spends much of the day cruising rapidly over reef structure while searching for benthic invertebrates, fish eggs, mollusks, echinoderms, and other prey. Capable of reaching approximately 18 inches at maximum adult size, the Lunare Wrasse requires considerably more space than many specimens offered in the aquarium trade initially suggest. Its vivid coloration, energetic personality, and confident behavior make it an impressive centerpiece for a large fish-only or predator-style marine aquarium, but its predatory feeding habits make it unsuitable for most traditional reef aquariums. Quick Care Guide Care Level: Moderate Minimum Tank Size: 180 gallons Temperament: Semi-aggressive Diet: Carnivore Reef Safe: No Region: Indo-Pacific – Red Sea and East Africa to the Central Pacific Scientific Name: Thalassoma lunare Tank Requirements Provide a large aquarium with extensive horizontal swimming space and substantial, securely positioned rockwork. Caves, ledges, and sheltered retreats are useful, but the aquascape should remain open enough for this fast-moving wrasse to cruise freely throughout the tank. A sand substrate is appropriate and provides a natural-looking environment, although this species does not rely on deep sand for sleeping in the same manner as many Halichoeres wrasses. Stable rockwork is important because mature specimens are powerful, inquisitive foragers that may disturb loose rubble while searching for food. Moderate to strong water movement, excellent oxygenation, and efficient filtration are recommended. A tightly fitted lid or secure mesh cover is essential, as Lunare Wrasses are strong swimmers and capable jumpers. Long-term housing should account for the species' exceptional maximum size and constant activity rather than its size when purchased. Diet and Feeding The Lunare Wrasse is a carnivorous reef predator that naturally consumes small benthic invertebrates, mollusks, sea urchins, fish eggs and larvae, and other available animal foods. Offer a varied captive diet including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, krill, chopped shrimp, clam, mussel, squid, and other appropriately sized marine seafood. Quality frozen carnivore blends and marine pellets can also be incorporated once the fish is feeding confidently. Feed one to two substantial meals per day, adjusting portions according to body condition and activity. Smaller individuals may benefit from somewhat more frequent feeding. Its natural hunting behavior will continue even when well fed, so supplemental feeding should not be expected to make ornamental invertebrates safe. Temperament and Tankmates The Lunare Wrasse is active, confident, and semi-aggressive, with territorial behavior becoming more pronounced as it matures. Large terminal males can be particularly dominant toward other wrasses and fish occupying similar areas of the aquarium. Suitable tankmates include robust tangs, rabbitfish, larger angelfish, triggerfish with compatible temperaments, larger wrasses, and other substantial semi-aggressive marine fish. Small, timid, or slow-moving fish may be intimidated by its constant activity. Very small fish may also be at risk, particularly with a large adult. Keeping a single Lunare Wrasse is generally the most straightforward arrangement. Reef Compatibility The Lunare Wrasse is not considered reliably reef safe. Its natural diet includes a broad range of reef animals, and FishBase specifically documents feeding on corals, sea urchins, gastropods, fish eggs, and larvae. Ornamental shrimp, crabs, hermit crabs, snails, small sea urchins, brittle stars, mollusks, and similar invertebrates should be considered potential prey. Coral structures and loose frags may also be disturbed during vigorous foraging. A large fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock aquarium is the most predictable long-term environment. Water Parameters Temperature: 75–80°F Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026 pH: 8.1–8.4 Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH Stable salinity, strong oxygenation, and consistently good water quality are more important than maintaining exact values within these ranges. Common Considerations Large adult size: Maximum size approaches 18 inches, requiring substantial permanent swimming space. Very active swimmer: Long, unobstructed swimming areas are essential for long-term housing. Predatory toward invertebrates: Shrimp, crabs, snails, mollusks, echinoderms, and other reef animals may be consumed. Increasing territoriality: Mature fish, especially terminal males, may become aggressive toward other wrasses. Secure lid essential: A tightly covered aquarium helps prevent escape from sudden jumping behavior.
