Antique Chinese Red Lacquer Low Sideboard Cabinet with Pierced Panel 62"W Dimensions: 62"W x 36"H x 17.5"D Antique Chinese low cabinet constructed from hardwood with a deep red lacquer surface, originally built as a functional storage piece for a domestic interior. The form is long and horizontal with four short legs, a thick plank top, and a balanced façade composed of cabinet doors flanking a central open panel. The lacquer has aged naturally, revealing layered wear and tonal variation that reflects long use and hand-applied finishes. The central pierced panel features carved geometric motifs framed by scrolling elements, creating visual depth while allowing light and air to pass through the opening. Brass hardware includes circular hinges, ring pulls, and a traditional locking mechanism, all consistent with utilitarian Chinese furniture of the late Qing to early Republican period. The restrained decoration emphasizes proportion and surface rather than excessive ornament. Such cabinets were commonly used in reception rooms or along interior walls to store household objects, textiles, or documents, functioning as both furniture and architectural element. The low height and elongated profile make it especially suitable as a console, media cabinet, or display base in a contemporary setting. The extensive surface wear, visible brush marks, and softened edges are qualities valued by collectors, as they speak directly to age, authenticity, and the survival of original lacquer rather than later restoration. The pierced panel adds a distinctive focal point rarely seen on purely utilitarian storage furniture. Condition: Structurally solid with stable joinery. Heavy surface wear to lacquer throughout, including losses, abrasions, and exposed underlayers consistent with age. Hardware present and functional; no major repairs observed.
