This 1904 color lithograph caricatures Joseph Reinach as a heavy, bulldog-like figure emerging from water, with a tiny man perched on his head, symbolizing stubborn persistence and self-importance. The exaggerated features and animal metaphor mock Reinach’s public role as a vocal defender of “Truth,” using humor and irony typical of French political satire of the Belle Époque. Le Rire was a leading Parisian satirical magazine founded in 1894, renowned for its bold caricatures, modern graphic style, and sharp commentary on politics and society. During the Dreyfus Affair, it became a major forum for visual satire, reflecting the tensions and divisions of Third Republic France. Size: 12.0" x 9.0" Condition: Good, Age-appropriate wear.
