LONGAN (PREORDER)

~15 - 20 lbs Longan aka "Long-Yan", "龙眼" Longan has a thin light brown shell with white translucent flesh and black inedible hard seed in the center. Longan is usually one to one and one-fifth inches in diameter. The texture is crisp and the flesh is sweet and juicy. The taste is similar to lychee but without the floral note. Customers prefer longan attached to the branches over the loose package. Longan is available from early summer to early fall. Handling Tip Selection Longan with dry light brown skin and no white spots. The skin becomes a darker brown as the fruit ages. Longan is firmly attached to the branches with no signs of crack and bruises. Longan gives a little when pressed but is not overly soft. Storage Longan should be stored at 41°F - 46°F (4°C - 7°C) with a relative humidity of ninety to ninety-five percent and no mist.  The typical shelf life is two to three weeks. Temperatures above 50°F (10°C) may bring concerns for postharvest diseases. Longan is not sensitive to ethylene, a naturally occurring gas that regulates ripening. Longan produces a low level of ethylene. Longan is sensitive to chilling injury at storage temperatures below 41°F (4°C). Symptoms include a slight off-flavor developed after a week, darker skin color, and rapid loss of eating quality.
