That is why an uneducated believer like Bunyan was able to write a book that has astonished the whole world." -C.S. Lewis ""The Pilgrim’s Progress is a classic of classics. If we exclude sacred texts (the Bible, the Koran, etc.), liturgical texts (Book of Common Prayer), and political books that Chairman Mao might take a dim view of your family not owning, The Pilgrim’s Progress is arguably the best-selling book of all time." -From Douglas Wilson's Introduction While John Bunyan was in prison for preaching without a license, he came up with one of the most inspired plots ever to grace English literature. Bunyan turned the Christian life, with all its struggles and its victories, into a romantic quest through a strange land. A man called Christian flees the City of Destruction and journeys to the Celestial City. Along the way he meets such memorable obstacles and characters as the Slough of Despond, Mr. Worldly Wiseman, Apollyon, the Valley of the Shadow of Death, Vanity Fair, Giant Despair, and finally the River of Death. Written in the English of the laborer and common tradesman, and never since out of print, this Canon Classic is a bestselling adventure that continues to delight children and adults centuries later. The Canon Classics series presents the most definitive works of Western literature in a colorful, well-crafted, and affordable way. The boy is running from an abusive father, the man is running to freedom, and at first the Mississippi River seems a sure path to deliverance for the both of them. But, ready or not, the river brings them steamboats and slavecatchers, predatory con men, feuding families of the Old South, treasure, and very few friends. Huck comes to realize that civilization might be even harder to navigate than the Great River itself. This Canon Classic is one of the best adventure stories ever written—full of humor, intrigue, and action—and a blisteringly satirical social commentary at the same time.
