Liberty Lounger

The Moooi Liberty Lounger by Atelier Van Lieshout is what happens when a sculptor decides to make furniture using nothing but instinct and a month-long creative sprint. Joep van Lieshout set himself this wild challenge - create one chair per day for thirty days with no sketches, no measurements, just raw interaction with American walnut and whatever his hands told him felt right. The result is this angular, clean-lined piece that's more like having a sculpture you can actually use in your living room. The proportions are striking - nearly six feet long with this elongated armrest that works perfectly as a side table for your coffee or book. The included sheepskin adds this unexpected softness to all those hard wooden angles, and you can position it however feels most comfortable whether you're sitting upright or sprawling out for a nap. What makes the Liberty Lounger genuinely interesting rather than just conceptually cool is how those intuitive proportions actually work for real bodies and real spaces. The seat height varies from about 11 to 17 inches depending on where you position yourself, so it accommodates different ways of sitting or lounging without feeling awkward. At 79 pounds of solid walnut, this isn't something you'll be moving around much, but it has the kind of presence and weight that makes a room feel more grounded and substantial. The wood develops character over time, and the sheepskin can be cleaned or replaced as needed. It works equally well as a conversation piece in a minimalist space or as functional seating that happens to look like modern art. Moooi has always specialized in working with artists and designers who bring fine art sensibilities into everyday objects, and the Liberty Lounger perfectly captures this approach. Founded by Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers, the Dutch company seeks out collaborations that challenge how we think about the boundaries between art, craft, and functional design. Their partnership with Atelier Van Lieshout reflects Moooi's commitment to pieces that tell stories and embody philosophical ideas while still serving genuine practical purposes in people's homes. The Liberty collection represents their belief that furniture should engage with larger cultural movements and artistic traditions, creating objects that enhance daily life through both beauty and deeper meaning.
