Leyland Cypress Tree – America’s Most Popular Fast-Growing Privacy Screen When it comes to fast, effective, beautiful privacy screening, no tree comes close to the Leyland Cypress. The most widely planted privacy screen tree in the United States, Leyland Cypress grows an extraordinary 3–4 feet per year — creating a dense, lush, year-round green wall that blocks views, buffers noise, and transforms exposed properties into private retreats in just a few seasons. Soft, feathery foliage. Classic pyramidal form. Adaptable to a wide range of soils and climates. Available from 1 Quart starter trees through established 7–8 ft. specimens, with money-saving 10-Packs for complete privacy hedgerows at every scale. Why You’ll Love the Leyland Cypress Extraordinary Growth Rate: 3–4 ft. per year — one of the fastest-growing trees available, period. A 2–3 ft. tree can reach 15–18 ft. within 4–5 years Dense, Year-Round Privacy: Thick, overlapping branches and persistent evergreen foliage provide effective screening 365 days a year — unlike deciduous alternatives that go bare in winter Soft, Feathery Foliage: Fine-textured, blue-green needles with a graceful, feathery appearance — more elegant than many other privacy screen options Naturally Pyramidal Form: Dense, upright, conical shape requires no shearing to maintain — a naturally beautiful silhouette that improves with age Adaptable: Thrives in a wide range of soils — clay, loam, and sandy soils are all tolerated. Performs well in coastal and inland environments alike Low Maintenance: Once established, requires minimal care — no regular pruning, no special feeding, no fuss Noise & Wind Reduction: Dense evergreen hedgerows significantly reduce wind exposure and buffer road and neighbor noise Wildlife Habitat: Dense branching provides critical nesting and winter shelter for birds and beneficial wildlife Planning Your Privacy Screen – Spacing & 10-Pack Guide For a dense, continuous privacy screen, plant Leyland Cypress trees 6–8 feet apart. At this spacing, canopies will merge within 3–4 years to form a seamless green wall. A 10-Pack covers approximately 60–80 linear feet of screening — enough for most residential property lines, pool enclosures, and road-facing borders. 1–2 ft. 10-Pack ($199.95): Best value for patient growers — covers 60–80 ft. at ~$20/tree. Full screening in 5–6 years 2–3 ft. 10-Pack ($599.95): Popular choice — covers 60–80 ft. at ~$60/tree. Full screening in 4–5 years 3–4 ft. 10-Pack ($799.00): Great head start — covers 60–80 ft. at ~$80/tree. Full screening in 3–4 years 4–5 ft. 10-Pack ($1,299.95): Immediate visual impact — covers 60–80 ft. at ~$130/tree. Full screening in 2–3 years 5–6 ft. 10-Pack ($1,499.95): Near-instant privacy — covers 60–80 ft. at ~$150/tree. Effective screening from day one 6–7 ft. & 7–8 ft. 10-Packs: Maximum immediate impact — instant privacy from the moment of planting Growing Zones & Care Guide USDA Hardiness Zones: Zones 6–10. Leyland Cypress thrives across a wide range of climates — from the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast to the Pacific Coast and Gulf Coast. It is not suited to Zone 5 or colder, where winter temperatures can cause significant dieback. Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade. Full sun (6+ hours daily) produces the densest growth and best screening. Tolerates partial shade but with reduced density and growth rate. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, Leyland Cypress is moderately drought-tolerant. Deep, infrequent watering is preferred over frequent shallow watering. Soil: Adaptable to clay, loam, and sandy soils. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.5). Avoid waterlogged or poorly drained sites, which can promote root rot and Seiridium canker — the most common Leyland Cypress disease. Spacing: Plant 6–8 ft. apart for a privacy hedge. For a windbreak or specimen planting, 10–15 ft. spacing allows trees to develop their full natural form. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring during the first 2–3 years to support rapid establishment. Established trees in average soils typically need little to no fertilization. Pruning: Minimal pruning needed for privacy hedges — the natural pyramidal form is self-maintaining. If height control is desired, tip-prune the central leader in late winter. Avoid cutting back into bare wood, which does not regenerate well. Disease Note: Seiridium canker and Botryosphaeria canker can affect Leyland Cypress in hot, humid climates or stressed trees. Maintain good airflow by not planting too close together, avoid overhead irrigation, and remove any infected branches promptly. Growth Rate: 3–4 ft. per year under good conditions. Trees planted at 2–3 ft. can reach 15–18 ft. within 4–5 years. Mature Size: Typically 40–60 ft. tall and 15–20 ft. wide at maturity in ideal conditions, though most privacy hedges are maintained at 15–25 ft. Want a Different Look for Your Privacy Screen?
