Letters on Natural Magic

Sir David Brewster. Letters on Natural Magic Addressed to Sir Walter Scott, Bart. London: William Tegg and Co., 1856. Seventh Edition. Notes Sir David Brewster was a towering Scottish scientist, inventor, and prolific writer who is fundamentally remembered as a founding father of modern experimental optics. A child prodigy educated at the University of Edinburgh, Brewster made groundbreaking discoveries regarding the polarization of light—giving rise to "Brewster's angle"—and famously invented the kaleidoscope in 1816. His unique intellectual position allowed him to blend rigorous physical sciences with popular literature. Driven by an Enlightenment desire to dissolve widespread superstition, Brewster engaged in a fascinating, long-running correspondence with his close friend, the legendary historical novelist Sir Walter Scott. After Scott published his Letters on Demonology and Witchcraft in 1830, Brewster penned this brilliant scientific counterpoint, seeking to systematically debunk the supernatural by proving that historic "miracles," optical illusions, and ghost sightings were merely misread chemical, optical, or mechanical phenomena. First published in 1832, this 1856 Seventh Edition stands as a record of mid-19th-century scientific entertainment. Formatted as a series of thirteen open letters, the text investigates an astonishing array of anomalies, covering everything from spectral illusions and ventriloquism to spontaneous combustion, automations, and Charles Babbage's early calculating machines. For antiquarian collectors, the volume is particularly notable for its distinct visual presentation, utilizing numerous detailed inline woodcuts and specialized overlay illustration flaps to demonstrate how human optics can be deceived. Wrapped in Tegg's signature embossed decorative cloth with gilt spine lettering, this Victorian edition brilliantly captures an era fascinated by the fine line separating magic from empirical science. Description Green embossed cloth binding with gilt lettering to spine. Darkening to edges. Intact. Good condition overall.
