Everyone Finds Pleasure by J.J. Grandville

This charming hand-colored plate from Grandville's celebrated 'Les Métamorphoses du Jour' captures the French master's genius for social satire through anthropomorphic allegory. Plate LXVII depicts a rustic tavern scene where two bulls enjoy their beer while a pair of sheep engage in a flirtatious dance, illustrating the proverb 'Chacun prend son plaisir où il le trouve' (each takes his pleasure where he finds it). Grandville's work stands as a cornerstone of 19th century illustration, his animal-headed humans anticipating everything from Tenniel's Alice illustrations to 20th century surrealism. The delicate hand-coloring, with its soft blues, greens, and yellows, brings warmth to the satirical scene. Published posthumously in the 1854 Gustave Havard edition, this print preserves the artist's vision through careful engraving by Forest. A delightful conversation piece that bridges folk wisdom and sophisticated artistic commentary, this Grandville original offers collectors a window into the golden age of French caricature.
