Wilma Goldcrest Lemon Cypress

Wilma Goldcrest Lemon Cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa 'Wilma Goldcrest')Wilma Goldcrest Lemon Cypress is a compact, upright evergreen conifer prized for bright golden foliage that instantly makes a planting feel cleaner and more intentional. The soft sprays hold a fresh citrus scent when brushed, which adds a simple sensory bonus near doors, patios, and walkways. Its naturally narrow, columnar shape gives you vertical structure without eating up much space, so it fits easily in beds or containers. Use it when you want year-round color and form that stays easy to manage with light pruning. Distinctive FeaturesThis dwarf selection forms a tight, narrow cone with vivid chartreuse to golden-yellow foliage that can keep its color well through the seasons in good light. The foliage releases a lemon-like fragrance when crushed, and the fine texture reads crisp in modern landscapes as well as classic foundation plantings. It is often grown as a container accent, but it can also be planted in the ground where winters are not too harsh and drainage is reliable. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade, with brighter color in full sun and some afternoon shade helpful in very hot climates. Soil: Well-drained soil is essential, and it adapts to sandy, loamy, and average soils that do not stay wet. Water: Water regularly to establish, then provide moderate water, allowing the soil to dry slightly between deep waterings. Zones: USDA Zones 7 to 10, with best performance in sites protected from harsh, drying winter winds. Mature Size: About 6 to 10 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, often narrower when kept lightly clipped. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a focal point in a container or entry bed where the golden color and narrow form can stand out year-round. Containers: Plant in pots on patios and steps for a clean vertical accent that stays neat with minimal shaping. Foundation Planting: Place near corners and along walls to add evergreen structure without blocking windows. Hedging: Repeat in a line for a narrow, tidy hedge, then tip-prune to keep the outline crisp. Seasonal Decor: Use as a living accent for holiday and seasonal styling, then keep growing it as a permanent plant. Low Maintenance Care Pruning: Lightly tip-prune to maintain density and shape, and avoid cutting back into old, bare wood. Watering: Keep moisture consistent the first season, then reduce watering once established while avoiding prolonged drought in containers. Winter Protection: Protect from cold, drying winds, and shelter container plants from hard freezes in colder areas. Soil Drainage: Prioritize fast drainage, since consistently wet soil can lead to root stress and decline. Fertilizing: Feed lightly in spring if needed, since excessive fertilizer can push softer growth and reduce the tight habit. Why Choose Wilma Goldcrest Lemon Cypress? Year-Round Color: Golden foliage adds bright contrast in every season, especially in winter landscapes. Compact Vertical Form: Narrow growth delivers structure in tight spaces without overwhelming nearby plants. Citrus Fragrance: Foliage releases a fresh lemon scent when brushed, making it great near paths and patios. Container Friendly: Performs well in pots, giving you a clean, architectural accent you can place anywhere. Easy Upkeep: Minimal pruning and sensible watering keep it dense, tidy, and dependable. Wilma Goldcrest Lemon Cypress is a strong choice when you want evergreen structure with bright color that reads as intentional from the street and up close.
