Leibovitz L-15 Medium

Leibovitz L-15 medium was originally developed in 1963 for use in a carbon dioxide (CO2) free atmosphere. Specialty incubators which buffered most media in a CO2 enriched environment were not readily available in at the time. This lead Dr. Leibovitz to develop a buffering system based on salts, free base amino acids, and galactose instead of glucose to help maintain pH levels. L-15 medium can support many established cell lines and cultivate various viruses. LBZ-BBZ-XXX-000 contains 300 mg/L L-glutamine. Important considerations when selecting a nutrient medium include: cell type, culture type (i.e., monolayer, suspension, or clonal) and the degree of chemical definition necessary. It is important to review the literature for recommendations concerning medium type, required supplementation and physiological parameters required for a specific cell line.   Storage/Stability The liquid medium should be stored at 2-8°C and stay away from direct sunlight. Deterioration of the liquid medium may be recognized by: (1) Precipitate or particulate matter throughout the solution (2) Cloudy appearance (3) Color change (4) pH change The nature of supplements added may affect storage conditions and shelf life of the medium.
