Leatherleaf Viburnum

Leatherleaf Viburnum (Viburnum rhytidophyllum)Leatherleaf Viburnum is a bold, broadleaf evergreen shrub that adds instant structure and privacy to the landscape. Its large, textured leaves create a rich green backdrop that makes mixed plantings look more finished in every season. In late spring, creamy flower clusters brighten the plant and add a subtle fragrance near patios and walkways. As the year progresses, colorful fruit and strong winter form keep the planting from going flat when other shrubs fade. Distinctive FeaturesThis vigorous shrub is known for long, leathery, heavily veined leaves that are glossy deep green on top with a grayish, softly textured underside. Domed clusters of small creamy white flowers appear in late spring, followed by fruit that typically colors red and matures to black in fall for added seasonal interest. The habit is dense and upright to rounded, making it especially useful for screening and background structure. In colder winters it may hold less foliage, but it still keeps a strong framework that maintains privacy and definition. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade, with best density and flowering in full sun. Soil: Moist, well-drained soil is ideal, and it adapts to many soils if drainage is reliable. Water: Medium moisture, watering consistently to establish and during extended dry periods. USDA Zones: Zones 5 to 8. Mature Size: About 6 to 10 feet tall and about 6 to 10 feet wide. Habit: Dense, multi-stemmed, upright to rounded, and coarse-textured. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a bold anchor where the oversized foliage and spring flower clusters create a strong, structured statement. Screening: Plant in rows or staggered groups to build privacy with a substantial, landscape-friendly look. Informal Hedges: Use as a tall hedge that stays full without tight, formal shearing. Back-of-Border Structure: Place behind perennials and smaller shrubs to add depth and a dark green backdrop. Foundation Planting: Use on larger walls and corners where the scale adds balance and softens hard lines. Wildlife Plantings: Include where fruit and dense branching can support birds later in the season. Low Maintenance Care Pruning: Prune right after flowering if shaping is needed, since next season's blooms form on older wood. Watering: Water regularly the first growing season, then water deeply during drought to reduce stress. Mulching: Mulch to conserve moisture and protect roots, keeping mulch pulled back from the stems. Feeding: Feed lightly in spring only if growth is weak, since average soils are usually sufficient. Winter Placement: Site out of harsh winter wind when possible to reduce leaf scorch and keep foliage looking cleaner. Why Choose Leatherleaf Viburnum? Evergreen Structure: Broadleaf foliage and dense branching keep borders looking full and finished. Bold Texture: Large, leathery leaves add strong character and contrast in mixed plantings. Spring Interest: Creamy white flower clusters brighten late spring landscapes and add subtle fragrance. Fruit Display: Red fruit that matures to black adds late-season interest and supports birds. Screening Power: Substantial size and natural density create privacy without constant pruning. Leatherleaf Viburnum is a smart choice when you want a shrub that does real work for privacy while still delivering seasonal highlights. Give it sun to part shade, decent drainage, and steady moisture while it establishes, and it will settle in as a long-term backbone plant. Used in repeating groups, it creates a clean, intentional line that holds the landscape together year after year.
