Leadplant (Amorpha canescens)

Amorpha canescens, commonly known as Leadplant, is a deciduous subshrub native to central and eastern North America. It is commonly found in prairies and open, dry habitats and is valued for its drought tolerance, silvery foliage, and late-season blooms. Leadplant typically grows 2 to 3 feet tall with a spread of 2 to 3 feet, forming a dense, upright to rounded clump. The foliage consists of small, pinnately compound leaves covered in fine hairs, giving the plant a soft, gray-green to silvery appearance. In early to mid-summer, narrow spikes of small purple flowers with prominent orange-yellow stamens rise above the foliage. Amorpha canescens grows best in full sun and prefers well-drained soils, particularly sandy or rocky conditions. It is highly drought tolerant once established and does not perform well in poorly drained soils. Maintenance is low, with minimal pruning required aside from removing old stems in early spring if desired.
